ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) says persons are misreading the differences between the public and private schooling system when it comes to delivery of education the COVID-19 era.

The minister was at the time appearing on the November 28, 2021, episode of Real Talk with Karia J. Christopher when he touched on the topic of education and the delivery of services in the COVID-19 era as it related to public vs private schools.

“I think to a certain extent we're misreading it. I'm a product of public school education, You are as well, and I do think that we have excellent public school students and you have excellent private school students as well.”

Hon Wheatley was responding to a question on why the private education system appeared to have been delivering full-time school in the COVID-19 era as compared to the public system.

“I think the private schools have a very important role to play because of course the public schools are only so big, and of course, the private schools are able to do certain things that public schools are just unable to do.”

Public vs Private is a matter of resources - Dr Wheatley

Hon Wheatley said it is also a matter of resources, and who has more when it comes to private and public education.

“Most persons who go to private school they have perhaps many resources… while the public system generally would take persons who wouldn't have as many resources,” he said.

Hon Wheatley said while some public schools attendees do have resources but still use the system, he said some persons just believe in supporting public education given the choice is for a parent.

The Minister said; however, some private schools are able to do online education better, ‘I think it's actually an advantage to be able to have the technology, the resources to be able to go fully online whenever you need to.

“Of course, we know that creates certain challenges...and we ask for employers to be particularly mindful of the fact that we're going through the coronavirus pandemic, the worst pandemic in 100 years,” he said.

As a cost per student the private schools are actually a cheaper form of education.

That is not the reason. The reason is because of wastage and corruption that cause the public funds to be unavailable where it is needed!

You are not telling us anything that we don’t already know. Private schools will always have the advantage over Public schools. Everyone knows in the BVI, if you want your children to have hands on learning they have to attend Private school.

Indeed, private schools anywhere may have a financial advantage, but that does not necessarily make them better. There are many publically funded schools that are excellent (though not here), for example Brooklyn Tech. The real issue in the article is why the government continues to underfund education. Who do we want running the place when we're old? People smart enough to rise to the challenges of creating and maintaining a civil functional county? Or, undereducated individuals lacking in the necessary critical thinking skills for the 21st century. At the end of the day, if one is to judge by the governments actions, education is not a priority in this Territory

PLEASE, PLEASE STOP TALKING CRAP. YOU ARE ALWAYS LOOKING A REASON TO CLOSE THE DAMN SCHOOLS. ONLINE SCHOOL IS NOT WORKING. CHILDREN ARE LEFT BEHIND. A MONSTER IS BEING CREATED. GIVE THE EXTRA RESOURCES NECESSARY, THE PRINIPALS AND TEACHERS CAN RUN THE SCHOOLS.

The VI educational system is now subpar. Should be expected. Building your small country to the max and with quantity rather than quality would guarantee subpar education and with crowded classrooms and overcrowded prison.

Private business including private schools have just had to get on with it and adapt to a new normal or go out of business. Sadly the banks and government offices and schools have not adapted and continue to blame everything on Covid. They are leading us deeper into the woods.

Hon. Wheatley when the private sector embark on a journey they get value for money, projects are on time and within their budget and you bet your last dollar there's accountability.
When the government of the virgin islands embark on a journey there's no value for money, no accountability, projects overrun by millions and millions and more and always built for the past. The government of the virgin islands should be shame of your dam self to be out shine by the private sector. According to the older folks would say ayo make us $hit with shame.

You is real special. My son attend government school and was set up for failure after the principal teacher student conference which had no bearings on my intelligence I elected to remove his from what would have been his downfall and placed in a private school. Hence he has challenges yes but at least I see progress and improvement. Had he stay where he was he would have been roaming the streets all now. You have done not one iota of anything but rambles of utter nonsense as the minister of education. Walwyn had his ways but at least you saw something.

Let's be real: there are no excellent schools here in BVI, private or public. There are many excellent teachers but not one excellent institution. There is no point spouting nonsense, it doesn't assist anyone.

Jane I beg you to come to the BVI SDA, or SGSS, you'll sing a different song.

Nobody or institution is perfect, but they hold themselves, teachers and students accountable.

At ESHS and other public schools it's anything goes.
