Council for districts 7 & 8 up & running
A brainchild of 8th District Representative, Hon. Marlon Penn, the Council has six broad areas they will be tackling. The District Representative made the disclosure at a community meeting that was held last Tuesday May, 8, 2012 at the East End/Long Look Community Centre.
“This was one of the initiatives I embarked on...when I was elected I wanted to get a district council started because I understand the importance of having the support of persons within the community regarding a lot of issues they are facing. It’s no way that myself as the district representative can see and know everything that is wanted in the district,” he told residents.
To make it a success, Hon. Penn added that the Council will select sub-committees and “think tanks” that will be developed under each of the six areas.
At the moment, the Council has begun organising a cultural summer programme, and held discussions recently with some cultural icons in the community who are willing to impart their knowledge to the younger generation about building fish pots and other techniques in the fishing industry.
That programme, according to Hon. Penn, is carded to begin from July 16 to August 3, 2012 with the Education and Culture Minister Hon. Myron Walwyn on board.
The areas of focus for the Council also include the education and social development of the community; economic and infrastructural development; heritage and cultural identity of the districts and the Territory; sports, youth and recreational development; environment and health, safety and security of the district.
