Corruption fears ‘is a piss poor excuse’ against independence- Skelton-Cline

- said there is no country on earth with some percentage of corruption
Commentator and pastor Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline has said some amount of corruption exists in every government and country on earth but suggested that it should not hinder one’s aspiration for self-determination. Photo: Facebook

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Although the controversial Commission of Inquiry (CoI) called by the United Kingdom during the height of the global COVID-19 pandemic failed to unearth any large-scale corruption in the Government of the Virgin Islands, many people appeared to have been conditioned to believe otherwise and have been using it as an excuse against supporting independence.

At least this is the perception of commentator and pastor Claude O. Skelton-Cline, who said the corruption fears are not necessarily consistent with reality.

Further, Skelton-Cline said some amount of corruption exists in every government and country on earth but suggested that it should not hinder one’s aspiration for self-determination.

“There is no place on the earth, any government on the earth, any country, nation, that has ever existed on the earth, where there wasn’t some percent of corruption.

“Show me that country and I’ll show you a place where nobody lives,” Skelton-Cline stated on his Honestly Speaking show on ZBVI 780 AM on September 9, 2025.

‘Piss poor excuse’

The commentator was at the time speaking about the importance of electing solid and competent leadership and made the case of the United States, where such was not done, and now the people are reaping the consequences.

It was at this point that he said he heard somebody “in his spirit’ say that is why the VI does not need independence.

“I don’t want to hear you using [it] as some piss poor excuse, talking about corruption, especially when other people make you believe and think that you are any more corrupt than they are, until you believe yourself that you feel you are corrupt for something that you haven’t even done.”

Many believe that the allegations of corruption against the Virgin Islands was a ploy by the United Kingdom to create a distrust in the VI people of their duly elected government and to action their plan of a takeover of the VI.

You know if we were to be independent right now, I think we would be the only country in the world that doesn't have a public library. We would be the only country in the world that doesn't value customer service. The only country in the world that has outlawed all guns so any boat with a gun carrying crew could topple us. There's a lot to consider. So things have to be put in place before making drastic changes with no real advanced planning.

It’s true that there is some degree of corruption in every nation. However, its impact is much greater on small nations. For example, the $ 10 million gone missing in the Pier Park project represents about 2% of the GDP here but is a drop in the bucket when compared to the UK’s multi trillion GDP. Moreover, here we lack this thing called accountability, fiscal and otherwise. Sweeping corruption under the rug by saying others do it too strikes me as reckless and ill-informed. Would it not be better to proclaim that controlling known corruption here would remove it as an obstacle to prospective independence?

"Bouy, you must be slow or blind, independence in a critical time as these should be the last thing on B.V.I'S agenda. You really think tourism will sustain the island ? when the world is currently in turmoil on the edge of war. We should be focused our connection with the Caribbean islands we so distant ourselves from.....focus on food security, simple items that can affect the B.V.I should war is declared ...Making rent a little cheaper so that people can survive......Mannn hush yu mouth"

And if me and my family members get our hands on independence for the BVI, wow there would be so much contracts for me, all I would have to do sign them and get paid for doing nothing as I did in the pass, and with the skeltons and clines owning large tracks of real estate investment, we would become multi billionaires because the currency will then change to ECD dollars instead of USD dollar.
No more police meddling into investigation of corruption or vigilante killings or deals strike with drug Kartel for trans shipment of drug.
My church will get more relief funds from the government, John cline church too, did you say something about me? That I am not a man of the cloth? Shut up, in Detroit we say " ah want dah money bro" so let's g independence.

Slavery is an integral part of VI and VI history, Virgin Islanders mentality. In addition to slavery bring dehumanizing, abuse, exploitive, expropriative, sexual violence/rale,, exclusionary, controlling, an extractive institution, etc, it was a dependency institution. Slaves were conditioned to depend on slave masters for every aspects of their existence, ie, food, clothing, housing, transportation, employment, liberties, etc. Slaves were also conditioned that they were a underclass and that it was divine that they were inferior to and destined to serve whites. In the process, slaves were also conditioned to self- discriminate, etc.

Moreever,,slavery abolished but slaves descendants are still conditioned to depend on others. They have no confidence in themselves or in other slave descendants. They trust others , eg, whites, etc., over their own. This lack of confidence, distrust, disunity, etc., is manifested in appeasement, meritorious manumission, etc.

The hard truth is that Virgin Islanders are hopefully conditioned to believe that they cannot pursue independence or other political statuses unless given the thumbs up by Mount Olympus. Physical slavery is supposedly history but we are still mentally dependent on others.

Further, the VI is no more corrupt than other locales. Nonetheless, it must work to minimize corruption..Furthermore,,we must skilllfuly fashioned our constitution, so that the VI can be effectively governed. Can the big developed countries lay claim to being corruption free? Not condoning corruption. Keeping things real.

@Stealth, the way you insult and beat up on locals you cannot be an indigenous Virgin. Islander. You make locals look like some @$$ kissers who are stuck in the past,,dependent on colonialists, appeasers, cannot think for themselves, etc. I’m insulted. I dissent.

@Stealth, you hit the nail on the head..We have no trust , confidence in ourselves, and other locals..If you right you right. If you brown stick around. If you black get back. Sambos, Sambos, Dambos, galore..Incle Toms need to step forward. Here is a news flash. We need to stop misusing the Term Uncle Tom. Uncle Tom was not the coon in Harriet Beecham classic Unvle Tom Cabin; Sambo was.

Stealth, dependency and political patronage are definitely problems facing BVI residents.. Some BVI resident definitely suffers from the Stockholm Syndrome., adopting the philosophy of their captors. They have been conditioned to buy into their inferior status relative to whites.

@stealth ,, it seems as if you are positing the slavery institution as an asymmetrical dependency process, ie, focus beyond the simple binary factors of slavery conditioning and freedom.. Undoubtedly, the slavery dependency conditioning have extended to generations beyond slaves. We need to unite, embrace and practice group effort, developing and confidently demonstrating some independence. We need to shed the inferior m, underclass tag, which others want to place on us. Let’s shed that less than tag.

Claude has a point. A few points. 1. We as a people are responsible for the people that lead us, is we who put them there. 2. Independence will not happen right now so stop talking fart! 3. By the time we get to independence now of who there now will be on the political scene.
Independence has nothing to do with corruption. It’s a fundamental human right that any people must pursue. I am not condoning corruption it MUST be addressed. BUT it has been used to create division among the people to serve an agenda. BUT God is still on the throne. Let’s stand strong BVIslansers and fight for what is rightfully ours. Our forefather and foremothers along with many did a great work with this blessed country and we must continue that journey. Our children and grandchildren deserve it. Shalom!
