DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- As first and accurately reported by Virgin Islands News Online, that local Attorney Corine N. George-Massicote was tipped to be the new Speaker of the House of Assembly (HoA), Mrs George-Massicote was sworn in this morning, Thursday, May 26, 2022, at the 3rd Sitting of the 4th Session of the 4th HoA.

The swearing-in of the young female attorney at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom, Tortola comes almost three weeks after the untimely resignation of former Speaker Julian Willock.

Mrs George-Massicote was nominated by Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) and seconded by Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5). There was no nomination from the Opposition.

Prior to being sworn in, Mrs George-Massicote was employed at Trident Trust Co. (BVI) Ltd.

She was the second person tipped for the post in a few days after the first designee Attorney Hakim T. Creque turned down the job.

'Be a quick learner'- Hon Fraser

Opposition Leader Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3), who pointed out there are now 5 women in the HoA, urged the new Speaker to be a “quick learner” and to understand clearly the role of the Speaker, adding that some Speakers in the past have mistakenly felt they should be treated like Ministers.

He also urged Ms George-Massicote to take the advice of the Clerk.

The House is currently in recess.

CAN'T BE an elected member of the ruling party - they could only be appointed as a deputy. Must be someone neutral, hence the WRONG decision that Fahie had made when he chose Willock. We saw him through and through their rallies, so we automatically knew what side he was on.

You are going to do well. We have had other female speakers that have done a great job as well. I will continue to stress that it is time for the BVI to elect a female Premier.

Her first impression is a good one. I like the fact that she sounds like she is in control and not intimidated... Hope she stays in control, be fair and don't get intimidated especially by those two bully leaders on each side ..

You’ll darn know until Cindy, Kishma, pico and Heritigae friends get the job and position everyone else will be blasted as incapable, somehow only Cindy, Kishma, pico and heritage have honest transparent family and friends while once you are not their friends you are labeled as corrupt. I’m scared for the young ladies who actually would believe or take someone who brought in a lesbian to speak at a woman empowerment initiative as a role model or someone like Kishma who is a know delta as role model. I pray that you’ll young ladies look at other places for real leadership; Lily is an about screaming and acting mad and crazy………
