ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Leader of the Opposition Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) was asked to apologise to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), after accusing the Premier of making back door deals with the US Virgin Islands, during a recent sitting of the House of Assembly (HoA).

Members of the HoA met to debate amendments to the Commercial Recreational Vessels Licensing Act on May 6, 2025, during the Continuation of the Third Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly.

Hon Walwyn rose on a Point of Information, indicating that the bill did not go through the “usual fashion” due to consultations being had with local stakeholders and the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) through Governor Albert A. Bryan Jr and his team.

“A major part of the contention was the fees, that was a major part of the concerns that people brought to me as well from the industry. We have not heard back from the Premier and his team about the negotiations with the USVI,” Hon Walwyn said.

He also stated that the Premier should have freely offered information about these negotiations to members and in not doing so “robbed” members of the opportunity to bring this new information to their constituents to “say whether or not their concerns are properly being [alleviated]”.

Hon Walwyn accused Premier of making 'back door' deals

Hon Walwyn went further and insinuated that there may have been further discussion during the recent break of the HoA, during which time Premier Wheatley travelled to St Thomas for a horse racing event on May 2, 2025.

“We are being blindsided here after such a long length of time. We had a whole week and change...the Premier went to St Thomas to watch horse race, I don’t know what else he offer him…I don’t know what else they talk about,” Hon Walwyn argued.

The Opposition Leader concluded by saying members have “no further information” as it relates to the negotiations between the Virgin Islands and the USVI.

“What are we going to argue on? What are we going to say?” he asked.

Speaker requests apology on behalf of Premier

While Premier Wheatley in his response did not request an apology from Hon Walwyn about his statement, he did refer to it as “inappropriate”.

“He made a comment about somebody offering me something at a horse race, I don’t quite know what that means… I won’t go as far as demanding an apology…I think that comment was unnecessary and inappropriate, and I expect a little better from my honourable colleague,” Premier Wheatley stated.

However, Speaker of the HoA Mrs Corine N. George-Massicote requested that Hon Walwyn apologise to the Premier, pointing out Standing Order 38.5.

“I just wanted to point that out because it would be inappropriate for me not to,” she explained after some pushback from Hon Walwyn.

In the end, Hon Walwyn informed that he had “no problem apologising” which was the length of his apology to Premier Wheatley.

Is the HoA returning to being a 'circus'?

Hon Walwyn has always been seen as a controversial and confrontational figure in the House of Assembly, and many have questioned his decorum or lack of it.

Between 2011 and 2019, when Hon Walwyn was the Minister for Education under the National Democratic Party (NDP) government, former legislator and cultural icon Eileen L. Parsons, OBE described the HoA as a "circus", and this included the behaviour of Hon Walwyn.

Ironically, Ms Parsons is now backing the Alliance, which Hon Walwyn leads.

The lead here isnt the back and forth between The Hon. Premier and Hon. Walwyn , the real story is the throw away sentence at the end. Political stalwart Hon. E Parsons is backing The Alliance . With her political pedigree that is equivalent to an endorsement by our most revered leaders past and present.

Myron is such a humble gentleman, even though he knows he has to bat hard for the nation that cause him the critique circumstances thoroughly, he will apologize where he have to and get back to his hard working task for the BVI with his alliance brothers and supporters out there.

Give credit where credit is due. Myron is a natural politician and he is good at it. However, sometimes it’s not what you do but HOW you do what you do. Be careful sir of your conduct as you pursue your political goals. You will need some of those same people you will turn off by your actions. Check yourself before you wreck yourself!

Reality is there is no transparency with P487 and you definitely have to question his honesty. Why is this not all out in the open if there is nothing to hide. Everything hidden with P487 as he carries forward his own agendas without a mandate from the people.
Watch again soon as he tries another weasle way to say he has the mandate to take us to Independence and build an airport and not fix roads and not fix incinerator and not fix sewerage and not fix water supply and not fix like of spooner estate old peoples home and not fix NHI healthcare robbery and not fix greedy bill and not fix agriculture and not fix labour and work permits and not fix boating industry and not fix destruction of mangroves and landfill landfill landfill over our reefs and seabeds and not fix lost $20Million and not fix our nation. IT IS NOT MYRON THAT NEEDS TO APOLOGISE!

So if I reading this properly walwyn didn’t actually accuse him of anything walwyn is saying nobody knows what else is being discussed while everybody else in the dark highlighting his concerns about the lack of transparency with whole thing. What is in that for anybody to get offended over or be made to apologize for? The point that is being made is that nobody but the premier knows where negotiations are at with the USVI; what was promised to who for what in exchange nobody knows is all he saying how is that an offense!?

he is a serious man for serious times. I am VIP but Hon.Walwyn will be a formidable opponent, because although an Attorney by trade he is a business owner and business owners tend to get things done. Its the nature of business, thats why action man accomplished as much as he did.

Walwyn went to the governor and we don't know what they talked about or what backdoor deals were made. This HOA is a pathetic joke and they take it for a game to entertain their party supporters and leave us moderates and independents without representation.

Funny how Skelton had to actually apologize and all he did was refer to funny man as an Antiguan which he is. He wasn’t even accused of anything criminal.
