The girls were chosen by submitting their credentials to the pageant committee and after deliberations they were accepted to enter the 2012 pageant, according to Chairperson of the pageant Committee, Alesia Hamm.
To enter the pageant, the young ladies must be between the ages of 17-27, must be a Virgin Islander, Belonger or has to been living in the Virgin Islands for a certain amount of years.
Speaking to Ms. Hamm, she stated that academics is not necessarily a ‘must have’ when choosing a contestant “but luckily all the girls who do apply for this pageant are graduates, about to graduate or are currently in school.”
Held under the theme ‘Bringing Back Our Cultural Past, Let’s Celebrate BVI Festival With Class’, Ms. Hamm said, in order to be Miss BVI, the girl must know about the heritage, the culture and what makes the Virgin Islands the way it is.
“During Miss BVI we are trying to bring back the culture and the traditions of the VI.”
Ms Hamm, who has been involved in pageantry as a chaperone, a judge and many other titles for over 20 years, said that the group of girls vying for the 2012 crown is a very good pick.
“I think we have a really good set of girls, they have really been easy to work with thus far and I hope we can go through the organizing of the pageant the same way.”
The young ladies will be competing in categories: Introduction; Talent; Swimwear; Costume; Evening Wear and Question and Answer. Prior to the pageant, which is slated for early August, the contestants will be interviewed by a panel of judges.
This year, the queen will walk away with a car and a four year scholarship among other prizes.
Advice for 2012 contestants
Speaking to the reigning Miss BVI, Abigail Hyndman who was also at the event, she encouraged the contestants to pray for guidance and have faith in themselves and in God and by having faith, the journey ahead will be as beautiful as they imagined it to be.
She added, “don’t let anyone tear you down, don’t let anyone bring down your spirit, you know who you are entering the competitions and should remain the same person after.”
Ms. Hyndman told this news site that she had a very wonderful reign. She added that it had its ups and downs but it was a very successful reign and she did her duty by meeting the standards of what Miss British Virgin Islands should be.
“I am ready to move on in my studies. I will definitely never forget being Miss Virgin Islands, it has been a part of me for a year and I’ve grown to love it, but I can’t wait for the next Miss BVI to be crowned.”
She said the next queen has to be humble. “Being Miss BVI your life changes in a matter of seconds, you are immediately placed in the spotlight and you need to know how to remain grounded and how to not let it get to your head because it’s so easy to do so.”
