ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Saving the World Fair was officially declared opened to the public this morning, June 5, 2013 at the Sir Olva Georges Plaza where the call was made for all to make good the available information that can play a key role in the reduction of food wastage and ultimately the preservation of the environment.

Saving the World Fair & Parade for the Planet  are activities celebrated on World  Environment Day annually and are part of World Environment Month’s observances in the Virgin Islands. For this year’s Environment Month, emphasis is being placed on the reduction of food waste, energy and water use.

Acknowledging this year's theme, “Think. Eat. Save. Reduce Your Foodprint”, Environmental Education Officer in the Conservation and Fisheries Department, Ms Cynara M. R. Duncan said that she would admonish all to join in the cause, which is geared to save the environment for the betterment of all.

She told Virgin Islands News Online that a wealth of information would be made available to residents and visitors of the Virgin Islands and all the information is geared to give guidance in keeping with the theme this year.

“Our focus for Environmental Month this year seeks to encourage all of us to eat safe while reducing food waste. We are all guilty of cooking a lot of food and then throwing the left overs away," noted Ms Duncan.

Among those providing relevant information at the Saving the World Fair today is the Environmental Health Department with their messages of how not to waste food. “They are always out there telling people how not to waste food, going into different areas and giving tips on how best we should preserve our kitchen, how to keep it clean and such like,” said Ms Duncan.

Also present was the Department of Agriculture. “They are dealing with soil, food production, the process where the food is actually picked and how to properly handle the food so that it would not be wasted during the production line. They are also focusing on harvesting and how to best store food,” highlighted Ms Duncan.

The Solid Waste Department is also out dealing with food waste as well as the pharmaceuticals who are giving tips on consuming certain foods with certain medications among other things.

The Parade for the Planet is set for some time this afternoon.
