ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5), along with Public Works Director, Mr Jeremy W. Hodge, visited Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke, and several districts on Tortola to assess preparations ahead of Tropical Storm Erin.

In an interview on the Ministry of Communications and Works Facebook page on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the minister stated, "We are making strides in terms of preparing our infrastructure, doing brush clearing. We were able to tour Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke, and various places on Tortola, and we have mobilised personnel to clear the drains in those areas. We encourage residents to be mindful."

Honourable Rymer urged community members to contact the Department of Public Works if they know of any area in their community that needs attention.

He added, "As we prepare for this potential hurricane, we are mobilising teams and seeking assistance from the private sector to help us clear the drains and ensure that our gutters are clean."

On Tortola, some of the districts Hon Rymer visited to make assessments were Districts 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8, and some of the representatives, including Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2), Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6), and Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) joined him.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) was also part of the assessment initiative with Hon Rymer.

Residents urged to remain alert

Meanwhile, residents of the Virgin Islands are urged to remain alert, as the latest forecast predicts that the center of Erin will pass north of all the islands, with a low chance of sustained storm-force winds.

However, any further shifts to the south or persistent westward motion may bring the core of the system uncomfortably close to the islands late Friday night or Saturday.

It is still too early to determine the exact impacts Erin might bring to the islands; however, the risk from swells will increase, and those in coastal areas should remain vigilant.

Other hazards may arise in the next 24 hours.

Residents in the Leeward Islands and the Virgin Islands should note that there are currently no tropical cyclone alerts, watches, or warnings in effect for the area, but this could change later today if a tropical storm watch becomes necessary.

According to the Department of Disaster Management, the next update will be provided around 5 PM today or sooner if necessary.

these matters should be addressed on a regular basis, it is called maintenance. just don’t sit back and wait until there is a pending disaster to be running around like the chicken without a head

Spend some of that travel expenditure making sure our country is well prepared at all times for rushing water from the hillside. Inspecting those areas regularly

But thank you Mr Minister because it is the thought that counts

Ghut and drain clearing. That's new. How great. Next they will think of a regular maintenance program for the ghut and drainage systems of the VI. But that is not coming for a long, long, long ..... time.

so we didn't know the drains needed cleaning. Why on earth is this newsworthy. This work should be regularly done. It just speaks to the perpetual lack of managemnt and leadership in this territory.

Business as usual. Start the cleanups days before and don’t get everywhere. But us these events as opportunities to over-charge….what a great manager/leader!

Imagine your Minister who should be working on strategic matters driving around and going from island to island checking if drains are cleared. There is an entire public works department to do this but yet here we are majoring in the minor. To make matters worse, the Premier and Luce show up too! Do these people not have any work to do?!When does something as routine as cleaning a gut become big news and requires a Minister to be on hand to inspect every gut?
