LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI- Noting that commercialisation and modernisation have weakened the bonds of togetherness in the Virgin Islands, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), in his Christmas Day Message, today, December 25, 2022, has called for the rejuvenating of the Virgin Islands’ family spirit.

According to the Premier, Christmas is about family, and people in the Virgin Islands have always lived as one big family.

“We can all remember the good old days of family and friends gathering at each other’s homes, the aroma of fresh bread, cakes, our favourite flavoured tarts, cassava bread and ham baking in the brick oven, the delicious smell from the barbeque grill, the laughter of children playing together, the excitement of going house to house caroling and spreading cheer, and receiving cheer and partaking in sweet guavaberry.”

Premier Wheatley said Christmas was a time of genuine and it brought everyone close together.

Bonds & kindred spirit weakened

“Many of the things that influence the society today, such as the commercialisation and modernisation and the rigors of everyday life, have weakened the bonds and kindred spirit of some of us.”

Additionally, Premier Wheatley said the VI people have been through a lot in the last few years, including the loss of loved ones, and if there was any other time the people of the Virgin Islands need to feel each other’s presence and support it is now.

“Let us make it our individual and collective mission this Christmas to rejuvenate our Virgin Islands family spirit,” Dr Wheatley urged.

Premier, your talk a good sounding talk about commercialisation, modernisation, togetherness, how things was, etc., but the previous Cabinet, (VIP) led by the former Premier, and now by you, the current Premier, have not showed, or done very little to strengthen the bonding of proper relationship, and to foster the confidence that is needed that you have spoken of.
The 7th district, your district, is probably the most filtiest district of the nine (9) electorial in the BVI.
Stop trying to distract us from these issues at hand.
In addition to this, we need four (4) full years of adequate representation for four (4) full year's pay.
And in further to this, christmas decorative light, and a fews hot meals will not solve our most needed, problems. Much more than randon speeches are expected, especially in a crunch time, economically speaking, when cost of necessary fastly rising, daily.

Indeed , the cultural experience is lost but it is not due to modernization and commercialization, it is due to the behavioral change in people, ie, the lost of the Village. Virgin Islanders should have been mature enough to embrace modernization and commercialization without shattering their rich cultural experience. They prove to be capable of doing both, kidding culture over the wall and embracing modernity and commercialism. It it up to the community now to now to try to regain some of the lost culture, which was slaughtered on the altar of modernization and commercialization. Many may look to government and politicians to lead the chsnge, if any, but the change must come from the community. In addition to trying to regaining the culture, shedding dependency, especially dependence on government must be a new year resolution. Good message from the Premier though.

The commercialisation and modernisation of a society does not weaken it but rather it makes the Territory stronger. If we do not seek to elevate our economy and standard of living by making it more modern then the standard of living will be poor and we will be considered an ‘underdeveloped Country’. Our forefathers had entrepreneurial spirit and drive, that is why we take pride in being Virgin Islanders. So I beg to differ with you Mr. Wheatley.
