MANHATTAN, New York, USA – Deputy Premier and Minister for Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has warned against any neo-colonialist outcomes after the conclusion UK-sponsored Virgin Islands Commission of Inquiry (CoI) that is currently ongoing in the VI.

Dr the Hon Wheatley made the comments during an October 6, 2021, statement at at the Fourth Committee (Special Political & Decolonization) at the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New as the UK Government prepares for the outcome of the CoI on governance in the Territory.

CoI 'disrupted' VI's public service - Dr Wheatley

“Despite the questionable motives behind the calling of the Inquiry, along with the tremendous disruption to the operation of the Public Service, the locally elected Government of two years and seven months, and the Territory’s hardworking Public Servants, have fully cooperated as we have nothing to hide,” the Deputy Premier said.

Dr Wheatley said the CoI has also taken a toll on the territory’s ability to efficiently prepare for the 2021 Hurricane season as well the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The tremendous administrative burden of meeting unreasonable deadlines has taken away precious time and attention from hurricane preparedness and COVID-19 response, including responding to recent outbreaks. We have also noted that the Commission has shifted its focus from supposed corruption to now the ability of the local Government to govern the islands,” he said.

CARICOM slams UK over CoI impositions

Meanwhile, Caricom in a July 2021 statement expressed concerns that the CoI may be preventing the democratically elected government from effectively carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

According to the statement, “The Caribbean Community has noted the ongoing Commission of Inquiry in the British Virgin Islands announced in January 2021, backed by the UK Government. It notes with concern some indication that the democratic political institutions in the British Virgin Islands have not been allowed to fully perform their constitutional functions.

In an earlier February 2021 statement, Caricom had also slammed the UK over the manner in which the CoI was established with no consultation, or prior communication, between the UK government and the Fahie administration.

“Heads of Government urge that every effort be made to ensure that the constitutional functions to be carried out by the Government can be undertaken without hindrance,” it said.

There is no questionable motive for the UK to call a COI? If they believe there is vast corruption and lack of self governance then that’s reason itself. I for one will be pleased to hear the findings. It will be good to know that there is or isn’t corruption at the heart of this and previous governments. If there is, then take your medicine.

When your white your right. Bet the conclusion is prewritten as they seem to have an agenda far from what they state. We get a bold new government with pro African heritage members such as the education minister and now is the time they choose to call a COI seemingly to make sure that the government can’t fulfill their campaign promises both by way of the Questioning and lack of assent to democratically debated and voted upon laws long over due to benefit the people of the VI.

Are you a member of government or the civil service? Do your statements have any basis of facts? So many uninformed opinions on this topic. Everyone wants to suggest it is black/white or UK/BVI matter. Like it or not, we belong to the UK and they feel the responsibility to ensure that we citizens are governed fairly by the politicians that they allow us to elect. We are on a lease but it is being stretched to breaking point. Call for a referendum if you want to break free and be completely on your own.

No I’m not a member of government. I’m a person who is tired of SYSTEMATIC racism in its many forms.

I am tired of the propaganda because I and many others despite what you think are capable of seeing right through it.

I am tired of my vote being invalidated by the UK who has literally done nothing substantial to boost the VI economy and used the 2017 hurricane as an excuse to try saddling The Virgin Islands government & future generations with Debt.

I’m a biblical person a historian and the Bible says the borrower is slave to the lender.

Note, none of your arguments had substance. what gives you the right to say I’m uninformed when it seems I’m more informed than you. All you did was sling mud and insinuate that I’m in league with the devil.

Ofcourse as your working from the same UK script. Take a look outside your box.

When British MPs get short listed to be in charge of Africa’s Covid recovery in 2021 anyone can see there’s some serious systematic racism at work and I’m not a racist for calling it out when I see it. perhaps you are for denying it?

        only you can answer that.

You’re forgetting that the British government also has black members. The colour of the people involved is irrelevant. Their morals are relevant and that is part of what is being uncovered. The COI is not a trial but it’s interesting how many look guilty!

They are not mutually exclusive topics. As a matter of fact they are closely tied. Your corrupt and abusive and vindictive behaviour indicates that you are not mature enough to self govern.

I agree. Corrupt people do not promote good governance. And regimes that lack good governance are usually based on corruption. All this 'forward ever' talk and 'vision' talk was pure BS! Just a mind of a crook with power. The most drugs enter the place under this regime. The most questionable transactions taking place behind the scenes with this regime. Now they bringing in casino. Just make it a haven for drug lords and money laundering while you at it. The UK needs to intervene. All hope is lost if the crooks go independent.

just for your information this former bird sanctuary did not make it this far based on monthly money or payments given to us from the united kingdom

somewhere around 1975 the british virgin islands was removed from "grant in aid" by the very same united kingdom who showed up in 2021 looking thing to talk

over the many years UK gave the territory HMP; passed through in 2017 & 2020 offered pandemic vaccines

Nobody said anything about monthly payments.
What the UK gives us is an economy which relies for investment on British law. Without that nobody would have invested a penny in another banana republic.

What does the Bird Sanctuary Era have to do with the current rampant corruption and victimization? What does it have to do with abuse of power now? With ignoring laws now? Laws that we wrote ourselves? With this type of behavior, maybe we should have been a bird sanctuary! This type of behavior is utterly embarrassing and shameful by our so-called leaders.

Continuing a accusations against the CoI is in no way helpful to our Country's progress. Admitting our wrongs, and our errors l may soften the CoI impact against us.
The present cabinet should have known not to blatantly waged a war of words against the UK's policies for the British Virgin y at such a time as this.
After Hurricane Irma our finances were in shambles, because of its desastrous effects. Since then we continue misspending money randomly without giving heed to accountability. It is mainly because of our own yndoings, the CoI is here and probing into mismanagement of our finances by political leaders and others that support them.
Hon. Dep. Premier Nataldo Wheatley, you are destroying your own political dreams by seeking a part that contriducts good common sense. You is in question even by you. You seem to forget the true saying that "everything that is done in secret will be revealed by the light, so is your, and others incompetence to lead in good governance.

I do hope that you all will get the good governance you are expecting after the COI. The grass always seems better on the other side. Do you people realy think that UK with it's own corruption realy care to save the BVI from corruption? Think about it.
