ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Lone commissioner in the VI Commission of Inquiry (CoI), Sir Gary R. Hickinbottom QC has announced that he requested an extension of time to compile his final report about the investigations.

Pointing to a number of factors he claimed has affected the work of the Commission, Mr Hickinbottom said that as a result, it is not possible for him to deliver the report by the July 19, 2021, original target date.

Hickenbottom’s announcement for an extension came only at today’s Wednesday’s June 2, 2021, opening of the first public hearing Day 8, which was live-streamed on the CoI’s dedicated YouTube Channel.

More suspicion lingers

The move has sparked more suspicion over the UK-sponsored Inquiry, that as more transparency is being demanded of the inquiry, the Commissioner suddenly needs more time to complete his report.

Press Secretary Steven Chandler in a statement said the commissioner had repeatedly expressed his readiness to use the wide powers he has to direct the CoI’s procedures to ensure the CoI is able to work as flexibly and efficiently as possible.

“That is particularly important given the pandemic. At the hearing, the Commissioner expressed his hope that all those involved in the CoI will work to ensure that it proceeds in an organised and efficient manner,” he said.

Governor Gives more time

The commissioner has said that while Governor John J. Rankin, CMG, has been kind enough to indicate that more time will be given, he requested a progress report of the CoI by mid-July before Mr Rankin appoints a date by which he will require the report.

“I am grateful to His Excellency. He, and all those who live in the BVI, may rest assured that I will press forward with the inquiry, and deliver my report, with all due speed,” Mr Hickinbottom said.

  • Reasonable request by the Commisioner of CoI. (02/06/2021, 23:02) Like (60) Dislike (68) Reply
The CoI probe is a necessary one, so much so especially in hard enconomic stagnant times like these.
All who is in favor of good governance will undoubtedly support the CoI mission of exposing and punishing corruption doers against our people's best intrest.
A Good government govern selflessly. A corrupt one causes the CoI to investigate probably acts of corruption against its own employer, the people.
Support the CoI probing. Skin color and country of birth has nothing with fairness, unselfish love does.
Support the CoI probing of probable mishandling of public funds over a number of years. It is the righteous and wise thing to do.

We agree it is necessary...but what has caused this COI to lose legitimacy in my eyes is the limited period which it is investigating...it should investigate the last 10 years. By this alone we know it was just set up to impose direct rule...they don't care about good governance or the people of the BVI otherwise the NDP 8 years of terror would have been included. They only have 1 agenda and the decision is already made. These people thing BVI people stupid. And as for Jaspert...it just shows fickleness... set up a second COI to investigate NDP or widen the scope of this one. And I am for the latter because 2 COI is NOT necessary and is going to waste BVI taxpayers money

If you think that skin color for known racists has nothing to do with it then check again. The Police force which under the Governor is in shambles and a disgrace with so many cops being arrested but yet neither the past governor nor the past Commissioner of police made part of this Inquiry. The $7.2 million plane did not make part of this inquiry. The lands given to former ministers didn't make part of the Inquiry. So many things that reflected corruption did not make part of the Inquiry. This is why I have no confidence in this witch hunt.

How can you judge someone else as haters with your comment? Unbelievable. You people are so sprung on racist and other races hating black people but you really don't see how black people are the ones who most times look at colour, generalize and focus on it more than ANY other race around. Since you guys are hated so much for your colour, you should teach others about love and acceptance and stop making it a subject in EVERYTHING. BE BETTER. A movie based on a white person can come out and you guys will comment and say we need to make the same movie with a black person. EVERYTHING is not about race. MOVE FORWARD. FREE YOUR MIND. Some black folks don't even KNOW THEIR HISTORY OR CARE ABOUT THEIR ANCESTORS. They just want to follow suit and follow trend. My God. Help us...

Maybe you got so lost because you was busy looking for the fault in the message instead of understanding the meaning. Which of course is more important.

No matter the color, we are one and the same species. Homo sapiens.
Although I find it useful to remember we are also all Earthlings.
      I come in peace

And why is that troubling to you?
What matters is how you feel about you and those who look like you.
Destroying those who look like you is self hate,a hate that cannot be equalled.
      Love your self,your brothers,your sisters.
It is difficult to love those who are loathsome to themselves.

An extension would be needed cause of late/no submission of submission of documents possibly because the said document have to visit the doctors office prior to reaching the investigating board.

The fact is that this has always been a conclusion waiting for a story. It is sad that in the 21st century democracy is not allowed to prevail. The way this COI is being conducted does not represent democracy.

If documents were received on time in sure no extension would have been needed. So obvious.
