FREDERIKSTEAD, St Croix, USVI- Tart Wars made a triumphant return to the west of St Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI) on Saturday, July 19, 2025, drawing large crowds and providing a major boost to local vendors in its second installment. The event, organised by West Gyul, followed up on last year’s successful debut with another day filled with games, community spirit, and, of course, tarts.

The numbers spoke for themselves. According to West Gyul, vendors sold over 8,000 tarts throughout the day—an impressive figure that suggests thousands of attendees passed through the Frederiksted gathering. But the economic impact extended beyond pastry sales, as vendors also offered a wide range of local favorites, turning the event into a visible lift for small businesses and entrepreneurs across the island.

While the day served as a celebration of culture and community, the competition remained at the heart of it all. Coconut once again claimed the crown, successfully defending its title as champion of Tart Wars.

Close competition

The competition was close. In the trivia segment, Pineapple emerged victorious, while Coconut won the games portion, and Guava captured the most support in the community voting round. With each tart claiming one win, the result was a three-way tie.

To settle it, organisers initiated a sudden-death final game with a simple rule: if your tart drops, your team is out. In the end, only one tart remained standing. Coconut held on—securing its second consecutive victory in a row and solidifying its reputation as the reigning flavour of Tart Wars.

With its family-friendly atmosphere, strong turnout, and clear benefits to the local economy, Tart Wars Part Two proved to be more than just a food competition. It was a gathering that celebrated the flavours, fun, and community spirit of the Virgin Islands—one tart at a time.

Here the problem I am having Tart makers and sellers are now using the process coconut flakes, its unhealthy and doesn't taste the same "Lot of us know the taste". They need to mark them if its process coconut say it on it, if its local, cocnut say it on it.

Jamal S. Smith (of blessed memory) you are missed at a time like this as you fought for all tarts' right to be eaten especially at Christmas.
  • I love how Tart Wars brings the whole community together! Coconut totally deserves the win again, such a classic. Events like this remind me of why I love island life. Can’t wait for next year’s battle!

Guava-berry for Me too. Have you ever had guava-berry tart and ham at Christmas time. Sweet and salt together. Its to die for. Traditionally #1 Guavaberry #2 Pineapple I don't eat guava or coconut. Nowadays different flavours are introduced. I will try anything once, if it taste passable, ill have it again, but nothing will beat Guavaberry for me and the guavaberry wine as well.
