Clip on leg may have cost Glorious Memory win in St. Thomas
Virgin Islands News Online sought to get answers for the disappointing performance for a mare that is no stranger to the winners’ circle even in foreign soil and was told that Glorious Memory in fact was clipped by another horse during the race, which Michael “Myke” Hodge of the L&B Stable believes may have cost it the race.
“The mare was clipped on the back leg, which caused the bandage to come off. It suffered a scratch and this might have been the reason for the defeat,” Hodge told Virgin Islands News Online.
He noted though that the injury was not a serious one and that the horse was fine.
Battling for a purse of $9,500 and bragging rights in the feature race, which went for a mile, Glorious Memory trotted in last behind the winning mare Moments Away of St. Thomas, Destiny’s Arrival, Who Shot the Sheriff and Leggy Blonde all of St. Croix.
This was the second time Glorious Memory, Moments Away and Leggy Blonde matched up. Their first Match Up was May 2011 at the Clinton E. Phipps Racing Park. The order of finish for that race was Flankers Lady, Glorious Memory, Moments Away, Tiger’s Mischief, and Leggy Blonde.
It was back to back defeats for L&B Stable as in the One Mile race for a purse of $4000, All Country could not find the strength nor speed to emerge victorious as the honours went to Sweet Sight of St. Thomas while Voice of Faith came off the pace to take second.
Hodge was not too bothered with the loss, however, as he said All Country had returned to action after being rested for a while and was optimistic of a better performance next time around.
The race-card was dubbed ‘The battle of the mares/fillies’ and was seen as a warm-up for the second leg of the Triple Crown slated for February 19 in St. Croix.
