ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - CIBC Caribbean has honoured two Virgin Islands educators with its World Teachers’ Day Recognition Award, celebrating their contribution to education and the lasting difference teachers make in the lives of young people.

This year’s recipients are Mrs Zubida K.H. O’Neal-George, Acting Principal at Ebenezer Thomas Primary School (ETPS) in Sea Cow’s Bay, and Mr Alandell Williams, a mathematics teacher at Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) in Road Town.

The award presentations formed part of the bank’s celebration of World Teachers’ Day on October 5, 2026, and provided an opportunity to acknowledge the dedication, compassion and commitment of educators across the territory. The presentations highlighted the many roles teachers fulfil - not only as educators, but also as mentors, encouragers and trusted sources of support for their students.

‘More than a profession’

“Teaching is more than a profession. It is a commitment to shaping lives, building confidence, nurturing potential, and inspiring young people to believe in themselves and reach their full potential,” said Fabian S. Devonish, Head of Country, CIBC Caribbean. “Teachers give so much of themselves, inside and outside the classroom. They encourage, mentor, listen, support, and inspire. And their impact often lasts far beyond the school years.”

In recognising Mrs O’Neal-George and Mr. Williams, CIBC Caribbean also paid tribute to the wider teaching community, acknowledging that many deserving educators make meaningful contributions every day. The awards reflect the bank’s appreciation for a profession whose influence reaches beyond academic achievement to help shape the confidence, character and aspirations of future generations.

The presentation remarks encouraged reflection on the teachers who have made a lasting impression through their guidance, encouragement and belief in their students, particularly at times when that support was needed most.

“On behalf of CIBC Caribbean, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all teachers for your dedication, compassion, and commitment,” Devonish added in a CIBC press release.
