McKenzie received the award on September 17, 2026, in London at an event hosted by STEP (the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners), the global professional body that connects more than 23,000 members across 96 countries.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises individuals who have made exceptional, long-term contributions to the trusts and estates field.

Pioneering role in VI

McKenzie first came to the Virgin Islands in 1996 as the Territory’s first specialist trust and estate practitioner, helping to shape the jurisdiction’s financial services industry from its early stages. He was a founding chair of the VI Branch of STEP and later served in senior regional and international STEP positions, advocating for the Territory on the global stage.

He was also instrumental in the development of key trust legislation, including the landmark Virgin Islands Special Trusts Act (VISTA), which has become a cornerstone of the VI’s reputation as a leading offshore trusts jurisdiction.

Beyond legislation and legal practice, McKenzie has been credited with advancing financial services education in the VI, including helping to establish STEP and financial services education programmes at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. That work is now represented through the Robert Mathavious Financial Services Institute, which continues to support training and professional development in the sector.

Career @O’Neal Webster

In 2013, McKenzie joined O’Neal Webster as a partner and head of its Trusts and Estates Department and is currently based in the firm’s London office. His career spans decades of high-level legal work, policy development, and mentorship of practitioners in the Caribbean and beyond.

McKenzie’s contribution to the VI has extended into community service, with support for charitable causes and assistance to persons affected by natural disasters during his years living in the Territory. His latest recognition comes after years of professional service, mentorship, and international advocacy for the VI’s financial services industry.

The VI-based community and financial services sector have extended congratulations to McKenzie on the achievement, highlighting the significance of this honour for both him and the Territory.
