Christmas in Spanish Town kicks off today!
The festivities will conclude tomorrow.
The much anticipated event brings tourists and repeat visitors to the streets of this well-loved island where dozens of stalls and vendors are on hand to sell their local goods and crafts.
Festivities begin each day at 10:00 a.m. and extend throughout the night with a bit of something for everyone.
“Christmas in Spanish Town brings a nice mix of people and affords small business owners with the opportunity to revitalise our culture,” said Sharon Flax-Mars, Chairwoman of the Christmas in Spanish Town Committee, which is hosting the event.
“People will be able to hear local artistes performing folk, steel pan, electronic and scratch band music; consume local foods and drinks, and watch our talented youth as a number of school bands and dance groups have consented to participate.”
Shereen Flax-Charles, Sister Islands Tourism Development Manager of BVITB expressed her enthusiasm surrounding the tradition.
“It’s an event for tourists, visitors and the community-at-large, and we anticipate that it will be well attended,” she said.
The primary goals of this event are to deliver quality family entertainment, including music and other cultural events to the island of Virgin Gorda and its environs, while at the same time giving a boost to the economy. A percentage of the proceeds will be contributed to charitable causes in the Virgin Gorda community. Proceeds from the 2010 event were donated to Bregado Flax Educational Center Secondary Division Music Department for the purchase of two flutes and two clarinets.
“We’re very excited to see Christmas in Spanish Town provide a venue for all ages to enjoy while opening doors for entrepreneurs to interact with the public and generate further business. We, at the Tourist Board support this endeavour and encourage the greater community to participate,” said Hadassah Ward, Director of Tourism.
Christmas in Spanish Town will take place on Lee Road next to the Fire Station.
Sponsorship for the event comes from the Office of the Premier, the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board, Road Town Wholesale 1975 LTD, Heineken and Heineken Light, Stevens Freight Services, Tortola Vision Center, Speedys, Rock Café, Mango Bay Resort, Ministry of Education and Culture.
