Chapman reaches BVI Squash Open semi-finals
The hard fought win marks the first time that Chapman has gone beyond the quarter-finals at his home event and is sure to bring a bumper crowd to the Sports Club tonight when he faces Jesus Camacho at 6:45pm.
Chapman beat Graham 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 4-11, 11-6 to progress, whilst Camacho had a more comfortable 3-1 win over Joe Green, 14-12, 11-7, 11-3, 11-2.
The action began to heat up on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 when the top seeds Peter Creed (WAL), Joe Chapman (BVI) and Joe Green (ENG) all went through to the quarter-finals, but #4 seed Micah Franklin (BER) was eliminated by Cameron Stafford (CAY), 3-1.
Stafford continued his run of form with a 3-0 drubbing of Antonio De La Torre in the quarter-final match up and will face Creed in the first semi-final tonight, after Creed beat Cunningham by the same margin.
Cunningham stopped in quarter-final
Earlier in the Tournament, top qualifying seed Cunningham secured passage through to the main draw after sweeping past Dion Anselm in the final qualifying round. The 20-year-old dominated proceedings at the Tortola Sports Club as he blitzed to a comfortable victory in the opening game. Anselm recovered impressively and posed a problem for the Unites States player in the next two games but he couldn't fight back against a rampant Cunningham who won the tie 3-0.
Cunningham then beat Kale Wilson in the first round of the main draw to reach the quarter final.
Winston Findlay, following his 3-1 win over John Addo in the first round of qualifying, defeated Tom Chapman before going down 3-0 to brother Joe Chapman while Rory Thornton's 3-0 triumph over Tatenda Gotosa sees him through to the main draw where he faced Jesus Camacho.
Jules Snagg, from Saint Vincent & Grenadines, bested Stefan Joseph and progressed to meet Antonio De La Torre.
The first qualifying round of the event was largely a battle of the local players as they vied for a coveted place in the next round.
No.1 seed Cunningham sailed through his tie with Paul Cowlard, winning the match in straight games. The first game was the closest of the two with Cunningham narrowly proving the victor but the United States player romped through the final two games to secure an 11-7, 11-5, 11-2 triumph.
Dion Anselm saw off Bradford Betzner in his fixture.
Rory Thornton and Tatende Gotosa both received walkovers while Jules Snagg faced Stefan Joseph, who overcame Neville Sorrentino.
