ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Second District Representative in the Virgin Islands House of Assembly, Hon Melvin M. Turnbull has once again raised the issue of the constant closure of the Cane Garden Bay Police Station, sparking a clash with Commissioner of Police Mark Collins.

This was revealed in the report of the deliberations of the 2022 Standing Finance Committee (SFC) meetings held in the last quarter of 2021.

According to the report, “The Member for the Second District stated that he was elected in 2015 and he would be happy to sit, as he has done with the other two CoP, to find out what the issues are surrounding why the Police Station in Cane Garden Bay is more often closed than open.”

Constant closure 

According to Hon Turnbull, the Police Station is not closed due to police officers sleeping in the barracks but closed with no one being there to take reports in the event of incidents.

“In addition, no one can enter the station except when he complains during press conferences or in the HoA. Then the station reopens for a short time,” the report stated.

CoP Collins stated that the West End Station covers Cane Garden Bay Police Station and he will flex resources, as they need to.

However, he said he cannot put two or three officers in Cane Garden Bay every day because he would be taking from Road Town and East End stations, which are busier.

“He cannot afford to do it because he does not have the resources to do it. He is hoping that with the new recruits, he would be able to get some resources,” the report detailed.

CoP disrespectful- Hon Turnbull

In response, according to the report, “The Member for the Second District stated that the CoP is missing something and for him to state that he would give the same answer since 2017 is unacceptable and disrespectful because it is not just Cane Garden Bay; but Brewers Bay, Chalwell, and Meyers etc. His issue is RVIPF is short-staffed because when the station is closed there are persons there sleeping and the Police Station is now referred to as the Cane Garden Bay Hotel by the residents of the district.”

Hon Turnbull further added that Cane Garden Bay is known to have much traffic and is filled with tourists, and it is unacceptable that there is no one at the station to receive any reports.

CoP Collins stated that Honourable Member was correct when he said there are persons sleeping at the station because there are barracks upstairs; however, he revealed that he will look into auxiliary coverage in terms of keeping the Cane Garden Bay station open if possible.

    Let me tell you why the station was closed. Under David Morris, when he wanted to bring more U.K officers to the BVI he stated that the Force was top heavy, he then depleted some of the ranks and instead of hiring more constables he brought in UK officers wo were getting 3 times the amount than a normal constable. The trend has continued up to this present COP. They hold substantive ranks and get three times the amount of every other police officer and are being paid by the BVI government, not the U.K. So there is no way they will have funds to place more officers down at cane garden bay. They come here and when they are suppose to teach the local officers, they use the same government funds go to the U.S and get trained and develop themselves. Go through the accounts and you will see. Show me one who has solved a crime, show me one who has not said to a local talk to us in stead because the local officers are corrupt. That's what they do and get exorbitant fees working only 8-4. A lot of persons are afraid to speak about it because of victimization.

    Cane garden bay is a 24/7 beach & entertainment spot its seriously unacceptable for the station not to be open to the public by choice. You know how long it will take to get from west end to cane. Thats why the criminals are embolden because police always come to clean up afterwards. Cane garden bay tourist or local seriously your supposed to be able to yell help help and let the word relay down the beach to the station. We cant wait until a avoidable situation happens to get serious.

    Thats crazy. As its been said where there is no vision the people perish. Literally in regards to policing.

    Let us be for real here for one minute and Hon Mitch you can do your research on this nearly 30 years ago when the force was run by a local COP CGBPS was fully manned by officers and in those days it had under 100 police officers and you telling me today when the number has grown to over 200 police officers you still short of police to man that station BS the people of district two deserve better I blame this on poor leadership although I think this commissioner is doing a far better job than Webb Morris and Matthews he is bullshitting his way through on this one he came and met this trend and he is following the trend Mr. Collins another thing I realize you met and you let it remain is no police patrolling on foot in Road Town day or night pulling on business doors to make sure they're locked and secured in those days police patrolling on foot until morning today police driving around in Jeep under ac someone in trouble and screaming for help they can't hear because even music they're playing this is the reason why we can't get results what breaks my heart is we still have a few good ones in high positions that knows what to do to make a difference and they just do like the rest and just watch things happen rather than make things happen one good thing I saw happen for the force was the DCP left that was long over due now his partner the parking lot Superintendent needs to follow take note Mr Collins it's you will look bad for year's he was using the police jeep to pick up his children from Cedar School today if a police pick up their children in the jeep he want to crucified them he move out his house into the police barrack with a married policewoman and today he doesn't want police living in the barracks his wife alleged he pulled his gun on her you never heard anything since and when the COP had his first press conference the same man you pushing up to discipline officers who do wrong and the people who should advise you just say, nothing we for real in this police force come on now
