ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Now that the Virgin Islands has been declared free of COVID-19, Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) said certain curfew provisions would be further relaxed.

He said the topic would be among items on Cabinet’s agenda when they meet today, Wednesday, May 27, 2020.

“Tomorrow when Cabinet meets, there are other curfew provisions that a number of other businesses that we are going to be looking at and determining what are the areas that can be even more relaxed,” Hon Malone remarked while delivering remarks on the Honestly Speaking radio programme on ZBVI 780 AM with host Claude O. Skelton-Cline on May 26, 2020.

We will call you out!

Meanwhile, Skelton-Cline issued a stern warning to Virgin Islanders, Belongers, Permanent Residents and Naturalised Citizens who will be allowed to enter the Territory as of June 2, 2020.

He said: “You will not come here in the country after what we have sacrificed, what this government has led, and then just do what you want. Because we are going to call you out, you cannot come in here if your last name is this, you must follow the rules!

“This really matters because it is going to make all the difference in the world of maintaining a COVID-19 free country so that when the rest of the world opens, we have first take.”

Opposition calls for relaxing curfew

Just yesterday, May 26, 2020, via a press release, Opposition Leader Marlon A. Penn (R8) said Government was hindering local businesses from doing business and making profits.

He said the present 7:00 pm to 6:00 am curfew should be relaxed so businesses like restaurants can operate until 10:00 pm or 11:00 pm.

Among benefits to his suggestion would be creating more employment in that sector.

“Restaurants not only require reassurance from the government, but they also need a fighting chance to survive the COVID-19 crisis. The severe impact of restaurants in the territory not being able to open for dinner has resulted in servers, dishwashers, cooks, bartenders and supervisors/managers finding themselves without a job,” Penn remarked.

His statement was made on the premise that there were no spikes of the virus in the Territory. Hours later, Hon Malone announced that the Virgin Islands was COVID-19 free.

They need to keep the borders close for now and open up the internal economy.

Stop repeating the nonsense that you hear others say. What internal economy are you talking about especially in the absence of meaningful stimulus from govt? Kerp the borders closed another 3 months and we will see.

What internal economy? The BVI economy cannot survive by itself. We manufacture nothing. We barely grow enough food.

Quarantine for returning people should be in 1 government-controlled facility. Not all over the islands and hanging with your family - that is bound to end in problems. Cayman has them all in 1 hotel and nobody leaves until their 14 days is done - no one else comes in until there is "room at the inn".

"increase in blood sugar levels, heart diseases, obesity and acidity. Basically, the later you eat, the less your body is prepared to sleep, which can also have adverse effects on your memory and efficiency for the next day"

Next question: how can one boost their immune system without the need of a vaccine?

why relaxed and not removed. What is the reason for the curfew other than a small group of tyrants dont trust the people and would prefer to lock everyone up.

I ain't mad about the curfew. I live next to two Spanish bars and that is a nightmare in itself. From the beginning of the curfew, I have been giving God thanks for the break. I still giving God thanks that they still cannot make any noise even thought they open. It has been so relaxing not having to hear the noise and still them talking on top of it. Can go to bed early now instead of waiting till midnight and children sleeping a lot better and restful in the mornings. On the weekend it worse. Plus no having to chase them and their johns from behind your place trying to have sex. No kind of shame what so ever. I know it may come to an end but I still giving thanks for the break.

Living here in the BVI, one of the first things I have heard about is people referring to us as down-islanders etc and whatever names they call us, please note that we all need and I will emphasize the word NEED each other. Some of us who work and live here have more experiences etc and so forth than some who are born here. Please stop it!!! Some came to visit and ended up working, some came to seek work and marrying a Virgin Islander, we are all humans and battling and fighting the same things on a daily basis, we breathe the same air, none is better than NONE! The British Virgin Islands is what it is NOW because of WHO we are. All of us coming together. You guys need to stop criticizing, whether you are from here or not. We are part of building a territory that meets our needs and means. Some of you who are born here came from Kittian, Dominican, Trinidadian, Lucian etc... ancestral roots and vice versa. Stop it!! We need each other!
