CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI- The Territory’s centenarians have been called “living legacies” as the 36th annual Senior Citizens Month is celebrated this month.

This compliment was made by Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), while addressing the Opening and Declaration Service for Senior Citizens Month on May 2, 2025, at Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church.

The Virgin Islands (VI) boasts eight centenarians. They are Mrs Enelle Smith (106 years), Mrs Emogene Augusta Creque (105 years), Mrs Betty Yates (103 years), Mrs Floresa George (102 years), Mr Evelyn Hodge (101 years), Mrs Iris L. Harrigan (101 years), Mrs Christeen Hodge (101 years), and Mrs Esme E. Turnbull Stoutt (100).

“Their lives are living legacies of perseverance, grace, and unwavering strength. We honour them, and all our seniors, not just for the years they have accumulated, but for the immeasurable contributions they have made — and continue to make — in our families, our communities, and our Territory,” Hon Wheatley said.

Treasure the experience of age- Hon Wheatley

Hon Wheatley also commended his staff at the Social Development Department for recognising and celebrating the VI’s centenarians in meaningful ways.

“As people live longer, it is essential that they also live better — with dignity, a sense of purpose, and the full support of their families and communities.”

He said the Ministry of Health and Social Development, in collaboration with dedicated partners, continue to invest in programmes that empower senior citizens.

“Whether through improvements in healthcare services, community engagement initiatives, or policies that protect the rights and well-being of our seniors, this government remains committed to ensuring that every stage of life is valued and supported — from the cradle to the grave.”

Hon Wheatley called on the VI to be a “Territory that treasures the experience of age, that listens intently to the voices of our seniors, and that values and empowers our seniors. Let us ensure that no senior feels forgotten, isolated, or unseen."

A month of celebration

Several activities have been planned to celebrate Senior Citizens Month, geared at not only celebrating seniors but also educating and advocating for them.

These activities include cultural showcases and recreational events.

“There are opportunities for all of us, of all ages, to connect, to learn from one another, and to express our gratitude to those who paved the way,” Hon Wheatley stated.
