Ceiling collapses in classroom @ ASPS

- 'It's a real low point for me,' says Education Minister

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Teachers and students of one class at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School were unable to access their classroom today as the ceiling collapsed sometime between Friday, October 29, 2021, and early this morning, November 1, 2021.

While our newsroom cannot confirm exactly which classroom is affected, Education Minister Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) confirmed during an interview with JTV News that no one was in the classroom when the ceiling fell.

"I was given information that the ceiling came down, the ceiling tiles and the structure that holds the ceiling tiles came down and we have a roof that is severely compromised."

Dr Wheatley said the Althea Scatliffe Primary School is one of the oldest buildings in the Territory and in need of some major repair work.

"You are going to find other situations, they are going to keep popping up because we have a crumbling infrastructure. The school infrastructure is very old [and] it has not been maintained for many years. Of course, I came and met it this way and it's a big challenge to solve," Dr Wheatley said, adding that money would be required.

He added: "It's a real low point for me what happened at the school today because the only thing I am imagining is what would have happened if a child was in the room at the time. No one was in the class and no one was hurt, by God's grace and mercy."

    Every administration that doesn't help fix the situation is contributing to it.

    This is why the CoI is on us. We have millions of dollars missing from hyperinflated projects with nothing to show for it. Meanwhile our schools and roads are left to fall apart. No accountability.

    Where were the parents at the protest today? Your kids could have been in that classroom.

    This isn't about who likes who or what $300. This is a serious problem and our future is in jeopardy. If this doesn't wake up the territory then we are a loss people.

    a serious look should be given to home affairs simply shift the focus from foreign affairs and move forward with development of home affairs

    i understand the need for foreign affairs especially the generating of income/revenue for the territory

    If you guys stop giving contacts to people then maybe all the schools will be fixed. The school system was to be first before all since Irma. You as the school premier you should of been the one to make sure school get before all these nonsense contracts went out

    Stop giving those lazy locals contracts to do nothing ! If you are going to employ a local à local to maintain schools or any government facility give it to a local that works . How about that guy who pack shopping carts at One Mart , he works public works as well . He works , he gets his job done . You see him all the time . Stop rewarding lazy , locals with jobs that they cannot execute.

    This is a joke. every year the minister of education and the FS should be meeting with Principals from February to come up with a list of priority project that should start as soon as school close for the summer. this should not be happening in the school time. Time to stop the rollicking and get serious about fixing the system. And that goes for all the ministers. The road before HLSCC was patched for about for times for the year already. Just look at it now. It needs patching again. You mean to tell me Public works can only patch a road to last two months and the minister is comfortable with that. It is very obvious that they knows nothing about patching the road. They just full the hole with some asphalt and drive off and then the car comes and throw the asphalt out of the hole so by the next two weeks the hole is even deeper and the cycle continue and everyone still have a job including the mechanic and the parts man.

    This was PLANNED to the THIRD DEGREE! But y’all not ready for this conversation. They stayed home on Friday and then Monday the ceiling falling.

    Look at it good, yes the school needs fixing but wow, that was LOW ASPS.
