ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The recent dismissal of several employees of CCT Global Communications in what has been described as an attempt at restructuring the company in order for it to “compete effectively in the telecommunications market” has found a number of polarizing views.

Following the dismissal letters issued, June 3, 2013 one resident has reasoned that “It’s better to have the company or perhaps the people than to shut down the whole thing and have nobody working.”

Speaking as a caller on the Speak Out BVI radio programme aired on June 4, 2013 the resident stated, “we are in a competitive world now and we have to understand what’s really happening around us…”

The resident felt that though the Territory predominantly ‘sells’ financial services and tourism, it has reached to a point where there are problems in its service industry, describing it as ‘poorly’.

“We don’t take the [invested] money and go out there and see where we can train our people to prepare, because we are in a competitive world,” he expressed.

He argued that the necessary infrastructure was also not put in place within the Territory, “right now we have a problem getting people to the BVI, we have an airway situation and we have a ferry situation,” he said.

According to the caller, the Territory didn’t do what it was supposed to do and is now in the middle of a recession and in need of money to get some things done.

He recommended that persons in the Virgin Islands get together and put the best minds together in an effort to bring good ideas to the Territory. The resident also said the government needs to sell ideas better to the people of the Territory.

Host of the programme, Douglas Wheatley said, “we always have to put the welfare of the people first… not a political party, not an individual, but the people must be first.”

Wheatley also recommended that the government institute a Research and Development Department or think tank. “We don’t have that,” he said, “we rely only on a few persons to provide insight into where we should go and what we should do.”

He also made a call for much more statistics to be placed in the public domain than is currently available. “You need statistics in order to help you plan, where you’re going and what you’re doing,” Wheatley advised.

I love the idea of Research and Development, but the government do have a statistics department with no funds to do the research. Many person do no understand the importance of the research, when it is done correctly it can reveal a realistic result. Right now the BVI need all level of measurement to pull together a research team that will give full understand of the theories. If we look at what affect the communication company it will beholds you to find out that it is a number of problem including the staff, service, management and the purchaser has put a lot of money into a business, and the want revenue to be generated immedately.

The fact is simple if a person who purchase a property, business or invest in education that is the attitude to gain quick money, however with each year a company is require to see some profit, so that they can then start to pay their loans, simple because the collatoral that has been put up at the bank would include land or house or a down payment of a percentage.

Therefore the purchaser is affect physicologically, little sleep, or no sleep, constantly work late to gain more so that quick payment can be made to the bank to decrease their loan. ITs hard and government need to look into it.

Schups. People here could give a $h1t about research or good ideas for the Territory on a whole. All they are concerned about is how they can make some quick cash off any initiative whether it's good or bad or whether they are qualified or not. That's where our issues are. Go down to PWD and other departments you will find stellar plans to develop the Territory but politics and bull$h1t keeps everything from getting done. We don't need no damn new department we need frigging common sense.

I've been talking about the need for a Think tank for years.
