ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) has criticized the Caribbean diet as one that is delicious, yet unhealthy, pointing to the portion sizes as one that is not conducive to good health.

Hon Wheatley was at the time speaking on changing eating habits during the opening ceremony of the Ninth OECS Council of Health Ministers where Health Ministers and other health personnel from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are currently participating in the four-day meeting being held on Tortola in the Virgin Islands from October 9- 12, 2023.

Honourable Wheatley who is the Chair of the Organisation Eastern Caribbean States (OECS)/Pooled Procurement Policy Service (PPS) Policy Board and OECS Council of Ministers said eating habits in the region bring challenges.

“In the Caribbean, we face a unique health challenge with our food. While very delicious, sometimes our portion sizes are not conducive to our health.”

“With small changes to eating habits and choices. We can enjoy the best of both worlds... The pleasures of fine cuisine and also a healthier life,” he said.

Caribbean eating habits criticized

While Caribbean foods are largely known for their rich flavor profile along with using healthy and natural local ingredients, this is not the first time a Caribbean leader has openly criticized regional eating habits.

Addressing COVID-19 vaccine doubters in 2021, the Current Governor of the USVI, Mr Albert Bryan Jr, pointed to the unhealthy eating habits of those in the USVI who were at the time refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

"The number one killer in the [US] Virgin Islands is hypertension, heart disease and diabetes, and people [eating] macaroni and cheese, stuffing, seasoned rice, every single day, souse and all of these other stuff.”

"They're eating at fast-food restaurants, they don't know how it's made, what it's made from, or what kinds of plastic are in it, and you're going to tell me about vaccines? Let's get real,” he said.

@ Reality Check your crusade to characterize this Minister as a drunk has been soundly discredited and in fact puts into question your own sobriety. When someone turns to personal attacks it is usually an indicator that they don't have any solid facts to authenticate their accusations. Add something of substance to the discourse . But I suspect you are incapable of making a coherent point , perhaps seek out AA for assistance for yourself.

He is spot on. We eat too much of the wrong foods. One portion of meat, one portion of starch and 2 to 3 portions of veggies. Drink lots of water, exercise regularly and get 8 hrs of sleep. Avoid stress and find enjoyment in life.

The statement by the Hon. Minister of Health Vincent Wheatley is very timely and we should sit and examine ourselves if we have fallen into that category. As we look around the Territory and check the health facilities as well as the schools, we will notice the huge number of persons who are overweight, and that contributes to diabetes. If anyone thinks that the minister is incorrect in his statement, just go to the Dr D Orlando Smith hospital and you will see the number of persons who are on dialysis as well as the number of persons who are treated for hypertension and we will see the need for our eating habits to be changed.

We must work harder to cut down on the large portions, along with the high sugary, fatty, salty, calorie, etc imported processed foods.. They taste good, and are addicting but no good for our/your health. Times have changed in the BVI, for I can remember not knowing anyone in the BVI who was obese. Now, it seems as if 1 and 2 is obese. Let’s push back from the table, throw in a salad or two, get out the car, start working, etc.; it is a healthier lifestyle. Our forebears were fed a diet of salty and sugary food and we have inherited the the chronic diseases tom them, viz, diabetes, high blood pressure,,etc. All our foods are salty, ie, salt fish, salt pork, etc or sugary , ie, sugar cakes, tarts, etc. based. Professor Hilary Beckles from the UWI that Caribbean people per capita are the unhealthiest people in the world, suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure , heart disease etc. let’s take of ourselves. What taste good to us may not be good for us.

@@Manjack, you are a frig....mehson. I was feeling good and excited when you was talking about eating wah we want. I developed a hearty appetite and I was going to get real food. But lo and behold you got serious, killing my appetite. I talk to some friends, co-workers, slept on it and came to realize we need to change our eating habits. The data, info, shows when we ate local our cases of high blood pressure (pressure), diabetes ( sugar), obesity, heart ailments, dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc were much lower, though the level of medical services was lower. There is something to eating local. Let’s try it and compare and contract. At least we need a balance ; life is bout balance. It will take time to quit cold turkey and wean ourselves off those imported processed food. An unhealthy nation cannot be a productive nation. Anyway, the Frig... out
