Cavaliers cruise, Carime crumble!

Will Pridgeon unleashes another venomous blow on his way to 33 in the Wolues 103 run defeat to the Cavaliers.
Jagnarine Persaud made a well judged catch to dismiss Pridgeon, scored 24 quick runs and took 2 wickets in a all round display of his cricketing ability/

The Wolues lost a slew of quick wickets including Ronan Kuscaj, who was cleaned up looking for a big shot.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – There was definitely an air of Calypso Cricket at the Cruise Ship Dock on Sunday April 15, 2012 as the palm trees swayed, the music played and the drums beat as tourists stopped to applaud the action in the heat.

The power of cricket to entertain and excite, even if, through no fault of their own, it’s only a Tape Ball version, was on hand for all to see as the Cavaliers, having chosen to bat first in the BVICA clash against the Wolues, set about the bowlers with a relish not surpassed at the best BBQ.

Openers Kwesi Sinclair and Teddy Nankishore set the table with a plentiful selection of stroke making from the sublime to the audacious and it was a disappointment to all that Sinclair fell on 67. Aarron Baker, though, marched out in purposeful fashion and promptly clouted a six and a four to ensure the momentum was not lost. He scored a quick fire 52 and towards the end Jagnarine Persaud (24) piled into a bowling attack that looked like fine dining on paper, but turned out to be a smorgasbord. Sam Robertson finished with 2 for 35 and Paul Norris 1 for 29. Young Wolues keeper, Shamoy Thompson, again took 3 catches and at one point had been responsible for all six wickets taken by the Wolues in the competition.

The final score of 201 was probably a few more than the Wolues would have wanted to chase, but they are a side you under estimate at your peril.

So it was no surprise that Will Pridgeon launched a violent assault on the opening bowlers causing much merriment to the passing cruise ship visitors. To be fair, most of them probably had no idea what they were watching, but all left equally impressed with their pleasant memories of Calypso Cricket.

Once Pridgeon had fallen to a well judged catch by Persaud for 32, a slew of wickets tumbled in, what I would like to say was a mad dash for runs. In truth though, the Wolues batsman had no answer to the Cavaliers bowling attack which offered skipper Nankishore many options and in each case, reliability. Matthew Plimmer was the only other Wolues batsman to reach double figures as his side was all out for 99.

Persaud, using a variety of pace and guile, picked up 2 for 29, Vishal Bharat finished with 1 for 2 and Aaron Baker chipped in with 1 wicket.

In the day’s second game, a star studded but unpredictable Carime side fell heavily to the steam roller that has become known as the New Testament Church of God. Brimming with confidence and no little talent themselves the NTCOG won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first.

Ex-Regional player Ashley Rhymer unleashed his big booming drives in reaching 53 and Collin Olivierre (40) and last week’s centurion McTair James (38 n.o) piled on the runs to set Carime at 156.

The Carime bowlers struggled for control throughout the innings, but Mervyn Latouche picked up 2 for 20 and Steadroy Jacob also got 2 but conceded 34 runs, a lot of which were wides.

The Carime found the NTCOG bowlers in no such generous mood as Earl Prescott and Trent Belfon tore through the batting. Only Jacobs with 33 provided real resistance as Prescott finished with 3 for 19 and Belfon 1 for 9 from their allotted 3 overs and the Carime were all out in 13.3 overs for 97.

Is it painful being so ignorant? Perhaps you could "send it home". Cricket is probably the single most important sport in the Caribbean - where are you again?
