Carvin Malone’s 'willingness to bridge divides’ exemplified his statesmanship- Speaker

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Speaker of the House of Assembly (HoA) Corine N. George-Massicote is one of the latest to pay tribute to the late former legislator Carvin Malone, who died suddenly on January 14, 2024.

It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences, on behalf of Members and Staff of the House of Assembly, on the recent passing of Former Legislator Carvin Malone,” Hon George-Massicote stated on January 15, 2024.

‘Immeasurable’ contributions

The Speaker said Mr Malone’s contributions to the Territory were immeasurable, leaving an indelible mark on both the legislative landscape and the hearts of those he served.

As the Minister for Health and Social Development, he demonstrated unwavering commitment, particularly during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. His leadership and resilience in the face of this unprecedented crisis were instrumental in steering our community through challenging times.

Mr Malone had also served briefly in the Opposition, following the installation of a Unity Government in 2022.

Hon George-Massicote said as a Member of the Opposition, Mr Malone showcased his commitment to the democratic ideals that underpin the parliamentary system and the [British] Virgin Islands’ our journey to self-determination.

His willingness to bridge divides and work collaboratively for the greater good exemplified his statesmanship.

‘Devoted servant of the people’

Speaker George-Massicote also said Mr Malone’s legacy as a devoted servant of the people will forever be etched in the history of the Territory.

She added that his dedication to public service was evident as he worked tirelessly to safeguard the health and well-being of the citizens.

To the family and friends of Mr Carvin Malone, we offer our deepest condolences during this difficult time. May you find strength in the memories of his impactful service and the positive changes he brought to our community. The House of Assembly joins you in mourning, and our collective thoughts and prayers are with you,” George-Massicote said.

    Well said Hon Speaker ; “His willingness to bridge divides and work collaboratively for the greater good exemplified his statesmanship.” It's a lasting source of disappointment that Hon. Malone's significant talents remained underutilized in addressing the issues surrounding the COI. As I suggested in a post last Thursday, January 11, prior to Hon. Malone's passing, I believe he could have capably led an official committee to address the COI, given his incisive analytical skills, capacity for tangible results, and the acknowledged talents you so accurately described.

    Lets hope something is done so he's properly remembered by generations to come. He was truly one of those that had this country at heart even though he was thrown under the bus to fulfill other political agenda in getting control of the party.
