Carvin Malone ready for Govt’ seat!
“There is a lot of work here to be done. We have to get the district committees, the territorial committees, we have to get the women arm, the youth arm, the senior arm all revitalized so that we can move to the general elections,” said Mr Malone.
His sticking with the VIP and availing himself for the position that he has now been elected to hold, Mr Malone said that he recognizes the importance of having a particular party that has a constitution that works so as to all the aims of the VIP to be seen through its membership.
“I think that with the experience that I’ve gained over the years that it is important that from now you have a transition from one leader to another that you can have someone who can assist in that transition,” he said. Malone said also that he would like to be part of the team in preparing the leadership.
He credits himself for being instrumental in the process in getting the process of the VIP to work. “We have a 76 member congress, we have 75 members show up here tonight. We had 21 alternates just in case anyone didn’t show up. So we had a full team represented here tonight,” he noted. “It shows that democracy is alive and democracy is well.”
With all that being said the key question is whether he is ready or interested in taking up a seat in government should the VIP return to office following the next national elections.
To this question Mr Malone repeatedly responded, “Whatever the people would have of me is what I will aspire to,” as he spoke with this news site following the party’s elections. He added, “I have served in the capacity for many years, a number of persons have asked me why I don’t consider running but as I say it was important for me to build the Virgin Islands Party as a fundamentally strong party.”
Mr Malone was elected to the position of President last night after Mr Julian Willock opted out of the elections leaving the competition between Mr Malone and Ms Roxie Romney. Malone won to a vote 50 – 25.
Mr Malone was the last person to have held the position of President of the VIP prior to last night's elections. He had sometime ago resigned the position and was serving as a consultant to the party.
Returning Vice President Mr Lemuel 'Chi Chi' Smith up until last night's elections, had assumed the role of acting President of VIP.
