CAPPOON’S BAY, Tortola, VI- The post office in Carrot Bay, which was restored but not used after being damaged in the hurricanes of 2017, will be transformed into a multi-purpose facility.

This is according to First District Representative Dr the Hon Karl Dawson, who made the disclosure while delivering his first Report to the First District at Cappoon’s Bay Playfield on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Multi-purpose facility

“We need to make services more accessible for seniors in the District. The current post office in Carrot Bay will be transformed into a multi-purpose facility, where in addition to postal services, persons would be able to pay bills.

“It will also serve as a tourist Information Center, and persons would have access to computers and the internet.”

Dr Dawson said funding has not yet been allocated for this project, but he will continue to advocate for it.

“In the meantime, some assistance is available through my District Office as we currently assist seniors with prescriptions and other errands.”

Senior citizens programme

The First District Representative, who is also the Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, said working with the seniors and the youth have been some of his more memorable occasions since taking office last year.

He said he visits the senior citizens programme at the West End Community Center regularly and supports its leadership in a number of activities.

“I ask you to recognize the efforts of Mrs Olympia Donovan retired late last year and has passed on the baton to Mrs Shauna Smith and Mrs. Jackie Smith, who are also doing an excellent job with our seniors and should be commended,” Hon Dawson stated.

It's a good plan to use the building for multiple purposes, I hope it happens soon and no footdragging. No seniors on any part of the Island should have to go to overcrowded Road Town to pay their bills. The WORST LOCATION for seniors is Water and Sewage, making seniors and handicapped people walk up that stupid ramp and then climb stairs just to pay their bills. By the time they get up there, they can't breathe!

Give credit where it’s due , Pascha Stoutt made this a reality. Pre Irma Carrot Bay post offered postal services, internet access services, tourism retail products and bill payment services were in the works.

This is not a new idea.

Did he say it was a new idea? IF an idea was good why not use. The fact is the building is presently not operating and he is trying to bring it back. Why do we as virgin Islanders allow politics make us look like fools.

“The carrot bay post office will be transformed into a multi purpose facility”. That’s a direct quote, I’m simply pointing out that it was already a multi purpose facility. It’s not about politics, it’s about correcting an incorrect assertion.

The funding hasn't even been allocated "so he will advocate". This guy has no pull. We'll be looking at the next administration with still nothing having been done on it, just like the last time this idea was brought forward.
