CARROT BAY, Tortola, VI- From donkey rides, lime and spoon races, sack races, bucket races, to donkey races, there was something for everyone to take part in or enjoy from the sidelines at the Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta on Friday, August 8, 2025 at Antonio 'Tony' Festiville in Carrot Bay.

As expected, a large crowd was drawn to one of the most highly anticipated events of the Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival to witness living culture.

And patrons were not disappointed by the number of events witnessed on the day.

The experience was further enhanced by the humour and energy of Mr Stuart Donovan, who did an excellent job at hosting the events.

Married Men dethroned @ Tug-O-War

One of the highlights of the cultural games was the tug-o-war between single men and married men.

The men with the ring have been overpowering the single men;  however, this year the single men dethroned the married men quite easily.

The married women, however, would would take sweet revenge for the men and save the reputation of marriage, as they made light work of the single women in the tug-o-war.

Donkey races

There were not many donkey races this year, as the donkeys were busy giving rides to children and adults alike.

When there were races, Clifton Forbes got the better of Jeffrey Forbes; however, Jeffrey prevailed over Clifton in the final race that was run well into the evening.

Exciting sack races

The day also saw some competitive and entertaining sack races, but none other than the race featuring Frank Mahoney and others.

Mr Mahoney has a reputation for winning the sack races but he was one of two persons who fell early in the race that was won by Joash S. Victor.

Victor received stiff competition and had to dive over the line to take the title, but lost a bit of skin in the process.

Among those at the Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta were Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7); Minister for Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL), and Deputy Speaker and First District Representative, Dr the Honourable Karl Dawson.

After the cultural and sports events, patrons stuck around for the stage show.

Because the people of carrot bay acknowledge their culture and pay respect to their ancestors while in town they use emancipation slogan to make money and no culture in them

You are so correct. There were no type of culture in Road Town Festival. Only drama upon drama and confusion. They use the Emancipation as a money maker. Thank you East End and Carrot Bay for keeping the culture alive.

I love the cultural appeal to the carrot bag festival but I think it should be at the opening of the emancipation celebrations rather than closing. Two reasons.. 1) it shows more of our history and Culture; 2) it may have more participants because more visitors are there for the festival at the beginning rather than the end … - food for thought.

No joke about that, those people from Carrot Bay can cook and they know how to bake tarts to. There was a lady that is no longer with us that use to bake some excellent cakes.

The tug-o-war results are hilarious – single men finally getting one over on the married men, only for the married women to swoop in and restore marital pride! I especially love the donkey races; it sounds like even though there weren't many, they were still a highlight. Reminds me of how much the kids enjoy interactive 3D games, maybe one day we will have crazy cattle 3d racing on screen between races! All in all, seems like a perfect blend of culture, community, and good old-fashioned fun.

We need to cut back on foreign imports for entertainment...Force our locals to step up...I am aware that some local acts are asking for more than they worth..., they can't pull or keep a crowd. Bands on the night to perform don't have musicians. The Committee need to fix this. What Carrot has is unique, East End is always known as the Xpats Zone. Depict unity, nice and positive energy, ..

@vi et al... the entire festival was held hostage for money. Donkey race in the dark then drawing the gate to collect money to re-enter. What is cultural about that? That's evil and wicked.

This has been the norm for years. We should be accustomed to this by now.

HAH! You must be new Turnbull my ax. The veterans know to move inside before the donkey race is done to stay in free. The last race is a entrance fee. Oldest trick of Carrot Bay festival.
