ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) and President of the Rotary Club of Road Town, Dr June M. Samuel, revealed this during Matters of the Heart: Cardiovascular Symposium 2026 held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital Lobby.

This symposium was organised by the BVIHSA in collaboration with the various Rotary Clubs in the VI.

Dr Samuel, in her remarks, said they were challenged to shed light and focus on cardiovascular disease as it is the leading cause of death in the Caribbean.

“It so happens that it is also the number one cause of death and illness in the BVI.”

A call to action

The Rotary Clubs were encouraged by District Governor William Aiken to pay attention to cardiovascular disease.

The Rotary family, Dr Samuel said, was happy to take on that mandate and felt that bringing some experts to tell the whole story would be beneficial.

Attendees were provided with information to manage themselves if already on the cardiovascular disease spectrum, and if not, they were advised on risk assessment to decrease their chances of cardiovascular disease

Among the panellists were Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr Rodger Miller, Dr Donald J. DiPette, Consultant Cardiologist Dr Handel Emery, and Rotary District Governor William Aiken.

A growing problem

“We at BVIHSA, we know the challenges firsthand of providing services for persons who may be living with cardiovascular disease.”

Dr Samuel said cardiovascular disease is a known growing problem. In the absence of statistics, data from the National Health Insurance (NHI) from 2020 suggests that about ten thousand people are living with hypertension in the VI.

“At the HSA, we know that 10 to 15 per cent of our admissions to hospital are related to cardiovascular disease.”

Awareness of cardiovascular disease is something the BVIHSA wants to promote among the public.

“We want to provide you with the information that you can have so you can make the changes that you need to make.”

considering our "new culture" is partying and drinking heavily at certain dates in the year i can only guess why.

we promote junk food and plenty carbs but hardily exercise especially once we finish school exercise get put down until we reach 30's and 40's when we realized we put on a lot of weight .

locals gym them hellas expensive tho with a few exceptions. run on the pot hole roads with limited side walks or hit the track

decease is a worldwide pandemic, and is caused ny a number of activities other than foods intake. All known activities shiuld be monitored, and unknown ones research. The lust of material posession for Centuries past and continuing cannot be overlooked. Artificial manmade foods and MGO foods intake have sped up or spiked the number of cardiovascular diseases.

Man without God intervention not being allowed by the vast majority of human choices will cause a continuing Cardiovacular rising of cardiovascular disease, disabilities, and eventually physical death. Let's choose wisely or be prepare to lose foolishly.

Thank you for the update, Dr. Jume M. Samuel.

Both BVI & USVI have the same problem with heart disease deaths..But nothing is done about it. Patients have to fly out to the main land, Columbia, Santo Domingo and Jamaica. I am a heart patient of all of them Cidemat in Santo Domingo I get the best result the best service...I hired a Bilingual person who speaks and understands english well. One thing I notice all of them are greedy, its money 1st...We need our own heart facility in our Hospital..We are shipping out too much money for heart care.

We think it is only a bad diet that give you cardiovascular disease but in the BVI it is RUM RUM RUM.

It is concerning that there appears to be neither a cardiologist nor a cardiothoracic specialist at the hospital, though this may not be accurate. If true, it raises serious questions about how patients with complex heart conditions are expected to receive appropriate care.

Got it—I’ll ‘do the research.' Since you seem to have a head start, please share the names of the cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons.

Teaching our young children to eat healthy is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. By introducing fresh fruits, vegetables, and balanced meals early on, we help build strong bodies, sharp minds, and lifelong habits that support their well-being
