ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Residents of certain sections of Capoon's Bay are to brace themselves for a five-day disruption of water supply to their homes and businesses along with the disruption of the free flow of traffic in the area as the Water and Sewerage Department embarks on a major pipe relocation project in the area.

The area to be affected is Capoon's Bay public road between Coco Plums Bar and Sebastian’s Bar and Restaurant and according to the Acting Director of Water and Sewerage, Perline Scatfiffe-Leonard, the process will necessitate the shutting off of water supply to residents in the area on a periodic basis. She explained that they works which will be starting on Wednesday February 13, 2013 will run until Sunday February 17. She said the project was started sometime back but had stop.

According to Mrs Scatliffe, the works are critical as they are forced to relocate the pipelines from one side of the road to the other because of the serious and dangerous safety hazard it poses to workers. “The problem there is that the workers safety is at maximum risk when they have to work in that area because of the electrical fixtures that are in the same location and we have to take the workers safety as priority, that’s why the project is being restarted.”

She said that during the process of relocating the pipe they would have to engage in disconnecting and reconnecting water from businesses and residents between Coco Plums Bar and Sebastian’s Bar and Restaurant daily as they go along. “What we will do to minimize the inconvenience though is to have the disconnections done when most people are out and hopefully the water is on by the time they are back or shortly after.”

The free flow of traffic in the area will also be adversely affected during the five-day period. The Acting Director said commuters are bring advised to be extremely cautious when using that roadway during that period. She said that in addition to the severity of the works, the Department will be utilising the limited staff available for the project hence it being stretched out over five days.

A pubic advisory was put out by the Department which stated, “The Water and Sewerage Department wishes to advise the public that between Wednesday, February 13 and Sunday, February 17 traffic will be interrupted along the Capoon's Bay public road between Coco Plums Bar and Sebastian’s Bar & Restaurant. The purpose of this interruption is to facilitate the relocation of a waterline in the area.

Motorists and pedestrians are kindly urged to exercise caution and patience when approaching this area. The Water and Sewerage Department sincerely regrets any inconvenience that this interruption may cause and asks the public for their patience and understanding.” This was further endorsed by Mrs Scatliffe-Leonard while speaking with Virgin Islands News Online.
