ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - TICO Wine & Spirit Merchants, a local business in Tortola, in commemoration of its 50th Year in business, is hosting a calypso fundraiser dubbed "TICOLYPSO" headlined by calypso legend the Mighty Sparrow, with proceeds going towards the community in a gesture of gratitude for the support from the people of the Virgin Islands (VI).

TICO's Brand Manager of Product and Innovation Ms Ann Reil, in expressing enthusiasm for the event, said international coverage will also be provided by Cable Network Tempo, who will visit the territory given that the Mighty Sparrow will be coming to the territory as the headline act.

Community Calypso Fundraiser

"We reached out to him [The Mighty Sparrow] on a personal level. The concert is a celebration of TICO's 50 years in business so Mr Adam Morrell, Managing Director, wanted to thank the BVI for 50 years of support. So we are holding a Community Calypso Fundraiser on Saturay the 16th November, 2019," Ms Reil said to Virgin Islands News Online in invited comments.

Proceeds from 'TICOLYPSO' will benefit earmarked projects at Safe Haven Transitional Center, Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly, Virgin Gorda Elderly Home, Family Support Network, Rainbow Children's Home, KATS Swimming Programme, BVI Little League Association, YEP, M.A.L.E., Green Sprouts and more.

BDO Limited (BVI) will be providing accounting services to ensure transparency for the event.

Ms Reil said the organisation has identified projects at the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly such as new AC units and an awning for shade.

"KATS offers swim lessons free of charge, YEP is a free out of time programme for children in the territory and the programmes, manners and values taught at YEP under the supervision of Director, Mr Stacy Mather are incredible," she further said.

Meet & Greet @ Quinto's

According to the Brand Manager, ahead of the main event there will also be a Meet and Greet at Quito's Gazebo in Cane Garden Bay next Friday, November 15, 2019, with proceeds going towards the Cane Garden Bay Restoration Group and that event will be from 6:00 to 9:00pm.

The main event will be held at the Festival Grounds on Tortola on November 16, 2019, starting at 6:00pm sharp. Entry Fee is $50 for General Admission in advance, $60 for General Admission at the gate and $275 for Ultra VIP which includes an Open Bar and Food.

More performances will come from the Elmore Stoutt High School’s (ESHS) Steel Pan Band, the ESHS Cheerleading Squad, VI Calypso Monarch King Paido, Cool Sessions Brass, along with DJ Lloyd (Aka DJ Love) and DJ Cool to keep the crowds going.

Sparrow a 'Fitting Headliner' - Ms Reil

Ms Reil said Mr Slinger Francisco aka 'The Mighty Sparrow', ORTT CMT OBE as the headliner can only be described as a 'fitting choice' for the community fundraising effort given its significance.

The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago - ORTT, is a national award and is the highest honour of Trinidad and Tobago awarded for distinguished and outstanding service to the country. The Chaconia Medal abbreviated CMT is the second-highest state decoration of the Twin Island Republic and honours long and meritorious service to promote national welfare or community spirit.

Sparrow's lyrics are famous for its social commentary and for being witty, ironic and ribald. Over the course of his career, he is celebrated and has been regarded as being the greatest calypsonian of all time.

Mighty Sparrow was crowned Trinidad and Tobago's Calypso King and also received the country's Carnival Road March title eight times each.

Some of the Mighty Sparrow’s well-loved songs include: Congo Man, Obeah Wedding, Mr Walker, The Lizard, Sixty Million Frenchmen, and No Money No Love.

Let the younger ones that is into the rap and gangster music stay away. The mature crowd will have a good time.

Calypso is the heart and soul of Caribbean music, rap and hip hop is NOT.

See the word "transparency" in there. So many times people say they're raising funds for charity and no one never hears anything again after the big day. Some organizations have even said that they have never received a cent. False advertising to encourage people to support and taking money and run with it. Tico has been here forever and they don't need to play no games. I'm looking forward to doing a little dance with Mighty Sparrow.

I know about the Mighty Sparrow! In fact, he visited ESHS and sang to us a few years ago. Bring ayo children out and let them experience something new. If you think they should stay home because they won't enjoy, the problem really begins with you. :/
