Caller on ‘Da Morning Braff' show on Tola Radio slams Opposition Leader

FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI- It was this morning, Thursday, July 6, 2023, on ‘Da Morning Braff’ talk show on Tola Radio 100.5 FM with host Floyd Burnett ‘aka’ Heritage that a frequent caller slammed the Leader of the Opposition.

The caller was Simeon Pope, who noted that when former Opposition Leader Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) was in the position, “he was always on the radio keeping the people updated.”

Mr Pope, a regular caller to the show, said that is not the case with current Opposition Leader (OL) Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL), as “I am not hearing from him.”

Hon Skelton is ‘old school’- Cindy Rosan

Another person who made up a three-member panel with Mr Burnett, Ms Rosemary Cindy Rosan, said she agreed with Mr Pope and noted that Hon Skelton represents the “old school.” She said while she "loves" Mr Skelton, his thinking is from the old generation, and “that is what we are trying to move away from.”

Following the United Kingdom-sponsored one-man Commission of Inquiry, there were elements of the population who believed Hon Skelton was the person to be the next Premier and take the territory forward. However, today Ms Rosan is questioning his leadership ability and style even as the OL.

After the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) formed the Government on April 25, 2023, for a second consecutive term, many claimed that the Territory would have a “strong Opposition”, however, no one was willing to elaborate on what that means.

Egos too big?

Furthermore, it is now alleged that the tri-party Opposition is not working well together and there are debates on many disagreements on strategy and loyalty. The six-member Opposition is made up of three Members from the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), two from the National Democratic Party (NDP), and one from Progressives United (PU).

The House of Assembly next meets on Friday, July 7, 2023, when they continue the Second Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly in Road Town.

    Thank you for posting the good and bad work of the government and also allowing the same for the blogs. However, please post more stories of the Governor and allow the same because the one bias online site is working with him to post a lot of his stories and only what he says so they can work with him to try to poison our minds against our leaders and the people of the BVI to believe we can do nothing good and he & the UK officials alone have all the answers and can save us although they are doing poorly in the UK as crime and the economy are at all time worse. To make matters worse they are blocking ALL blogs from being posted that do not agree with him and what he & the UK is doing and only allowing the few ignorant persons as well as their assigned UK PR team blogs that are in his favor to be posted to try to brainwash us to believe him and try to justify their evil plot to try to unjustifiably take over. VINO, please pay attention to what they are doing and bring balance now because the majority do not support the Governor and his UK officials plot & strategy but the other online site is working with them to try to make it seem so. VINO RESUCE US PLEASE!!!

    What does the whiners want Hon Skelton to do? In the Westminister system the Opposition is part of the system. Nevertheless, the power rests with the Government, not the Opposition. The Opposition should point out the shortcomings, in its view, of government. However, the Opposition should not be out there complaining if the government didn’t dot an I or cross a T. Indeed, the Opposition should be the voice providing feedback to the public if there substantive and serious shortcomings iin government performance. The Opposition looses its effectiveness if it is out where whining about every little thing, or opposing just the sake of opposing, living up to the meaning of but not the spirit of being in Opposition. The Government is on 3rd month in office.

      @Mustang, a sensible and reasonable post. In politics, Opposition should not literally mean oppose any and everything. Just because I have the title Opposition . The Opposition plays a critical role in governing ; it is the watchdog which aims to keep the government on the level, the straight, and grounded consistent with current laws, rules, regulations, constitution, etc. Nevertheless, the opposition should not be a witless nag, a fly in every ointment, unnecessarily opposing everything, behaving in a manner which makes itself annoying and useless. Instead, it should be strategic and tactical, purposeful, smart, substantive, etc in its opposition.it should where necessary work collectively with the government to move the territory forward and upward. It cannot just declare that whatever the government does is wrong without stating clearly and convincingly based on facts, etc why the government action(s) was misguided, outlining the cost of the government action(s), impact on the public good, stating clearly how it would have done it differently, etc. This will require some homework, in-depth research, strongly and convincingly making the case in HoA( cannot take to tge floor and talk foolishness like a nincompoop), etc. The Opposition just cannot declare that whatever the government is doing is wrong and walk away. That is neither helpful nor useful . It is just hot air and white noise.
