MAIN STREET, Tortola, VI- The Old Administration Building on Main Street, which underwent renovation in September 2024 in phases, will become a dedicated cultural centre and national museum.

This is according to Cabinet in a post-meeting statement published March 19, 2026.

"Cabinet, having reviewed and considered a number of options for the future use of the Old Administration Building on Main Street, decided to convert the building into a dedicated cultural and heritage centre, including a national museum with dedicated office space for the Department of Culture to promote tourism, education, and national identity."

Her Excellency, the Acting Governor, Mrs Rosalie Adams, chaired the meeting held on March 11, 2026, in the absence of Governor Daniel Pruce, who was overseas on official duty. All Members were present, with the exception of the Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change.

'Landmark of legacy'

Back in June 2025, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said: "The Old Administration building stands as the landmark of legacy. Its restoration is more than just a structural upgrade; it is preserving our cultural heritage. Where once a deteriorating structure stood, now a revitalised building uplifts the entire area.”

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sustainable Development, it was previously stated, will use the Annex to store the National Archives, the Territory’s historical and cultural documents dating back to the 1700’s.

A cultural centre and museum. OK, hopefully this cultural centre and museum is not an embarrassment as the Olde His Majesty Prison Museum. It is an insult to the term, value,,etc., of a museum. Cabinet decision made, this new cultural centre and museum will be well financed, planned, organized, maintained and sustained, being a place of pride, value , cultural excellence, etc. It must be a major attraction. Parking is a prime and limited commodity in Road Town, the capital city; there is an acute parking shortage problem. How will parking be accommodated? Road Town, the capital city of the Virgin Islabds ( British) have been without a Central Library since the passage of monster Cat 5 Hurricane Irma. Will a library be housed in this cultural center and museum project? Hope the substance, quality, function, etc,, of this capital project don’t lags but leads the words? This building is a historical building how much, if any, of the original material, features, etc., will be retained on the project? Is the building on the national Historical Register? How is the contents, artifacts, etc., from the old Central Library being protected and preserved?

If the building was getting maintenance it wouldn't have been looked at as old.

A Public Library would serve the children and Territory way better. Learning, knowledge, books, reading, inspires and grow minds. Can it be reconsidered at this stage? Respectfully, please reconsider.

I am all for a public library, but it should be closer to most schools and have parking. Location is very important.

How fantastic. Government caring about culture and heritage!!!!! Ha ha ha.

Oh wait what about all the neglected sites in the Territory.

The Sugar works Museum. (Why we building another one when look how the Government trashed that one and have it burried in weeds and building filth)

Planters Graveyard. Covered in weeds and most likely to be bull dozed out of existence soon

    The Dungeon. Buried in Weeds

    For Charlotte. buried in Weeds.

All the old rum works disolving into the ground and out of site forever.

    Fort Hill. Weeds.

    The archives dissolving.

    The Prison. Getting Paint!!! Yay.

Historic buildings knocked down and built on monthly.

No library. No Library. No Library.

Are we sure finding another way of handing out another big contract to friends is the best way of helping culture and heritage.

Maybe that is the point, all that remains of VI true Heritage and culture is money, corruption and lucrative contracts, consultancies, and advisors of the New Colonial Elites using their power to share amongst themselves. Hell belt on Independence to make sure no one can take it away from them.

Oh and can we think about finishing the Admin building and the Infrastructure.

Thank you BuzzBvi, You've echoed my thoughts.

Under the news item about the Old Prison Museum, I mentioned the negative response that I received in response to a request for artifacts for the Old Government House Museum.

It would seem that a genuine concern for preserving the island's historical heritage is low on the government's agenda.

A museum? Not a bad idea for something so meaningful for our heritage. Just wondering about how much revenue could be expected, maintenance cost and salaries. Could it maintain itself? I don't have any better ideas for the building but would like to hear other opinions.
    All the best.

This would have been an opportunity to cut back on country rent expenses. I would have moved back the post office there and a few other offices that we are renting for...We already have old Prison as a museum 200 yds away that hardly anyone goes to...

Is any real thought going into these decisions or are they just low hanging fruit, empty promises to appease certain people? How many 'cultural' buildings will these people build? They just committed to wasting thousands on designing a cultural village or whatever they call it behind the admin complex which is the most absurd, stupid thing after the round-about stop lights. Now this, what is this government really doing? Do they even have a plan? Do they understand? Are we being punked? No way rational thinking adults could have a once thriving Territory in such a tailspin! To add insult to injury they look at what's going on and call it progress!

A few Sheep, 5 Cows, 3 Pigs and 45 Goats, a nice potty to show them what our forefathers used to take a dump in, perhaps a Cotton tree planted in clay vessel, a framed copy of our National Song, an Aquarium to hold our Anegada Lobster, few bags of Salt from Salt Island, maybe a Rock Iguana being gently held by one of our Pink Flamingos standing cute in a corner on one leg dressed in our cultural wear, a few books from our local Authors and a couple local painting as well, maybe adult size wooden male monuments depicting a Scratch band such as Lashing Dogs, whilst the females depicts our Heritage Dancers plaiting the Flag Pole and lastly but not least a set of dummies around a huge table, some sitting, others standing looking perturbed as to what should be done, where they should go and how did they get there....these are our 13 elected re-enacting The House that is built upon the sand, sinking sand, that is! Just maybe, we can get our monies worth for this April Fools joke! I aint laughing though. Are you?
