ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Orlando Smith Cabinet today Wednesday January 25, 2012 has approved Marvin Blyden as Chairman of the Virgin Islands’ Festival and Fairs Committee. The approval came moments ago at the meeting which started at 9:00 a.m. according to Virgin Islands News Online well placed sources within the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).

According to the Cabinet Paper submitted today by the Education and Culture Minister Myron V. Walwyn, Xavyrna Samuel-Fahie has been approved as Deputy Chairperson along with Melvin Lettsome as Treasurer and Nerida Maduro as the assistant Treasurer.

There are 16 members on the Committee, according to sources, of which some could be expected to Chair sub-committees within the Virgin Islands’ Festival and Fairs Committee.

Blyden, who many believe is a strong supporter of the NDP, will replace Collin Scatliffe the former unsuccessful fourth district independent candidate in last year’s VI general elections.

The popular businessman enjoys the respect of many in the festival and fairs community and ordinary residents, having served for years in different roles and most recently as head of the sub-committee for the Road Town parade.

Over the years, the Festival and Fairs Committee has come under criticism for overspending and festival costing well over a million dollars.

The Festival and Fairs Committee is responsible for the four festivals during the annual emancipation celebrations in Road Town, East End, Carrot Bay and the Virgin Gorda Easter festival.

The Virgin Islands Festival Activities is governed by the VI Festival and Fairs Act of 2005.

What experience in Festival & Fairs does the young lady Samuels-Fahie have that she is the Deputy over all the other experienced people? If she is qualified then great, but I am just asking.

Ray was contracted to deal with Biwater. Days before election he went on national TV blasting the NDP and its candidates for the same contract. Read that a few times then tell me if what you're saying makes any sense. Secondly, bring back that PS for what? You all act like he's the only BVIslander qualified to do that job. If he was so qualified then why there's still so much left to be done in that department? Stop talking trash! These guys made it clear they didn't want anything to do with NDP, now the gravy train stop they changing their tunes. Why would you appoint people who said point blank they want to see you fail?

MB is a good choice and the best to be appointed as Executive Chair of the VIFFC. I do hope the entertainment is return back to the Road Town Committee and not contracted out to no Promoter like the past years. Allow the committee to hand it's affairs as it should. As for Carrot Bay, it should return to the 1 day and allow road town festival village close the festival season where it was open.
