Cabinet approves awarding of 25 tertiary scholarships for new academic year

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Cabinet of the VI said it has noted the national priority areas of study submitted by the Human Resources Department and the Deputy Governor’s Office in the VI, and has approved the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports’ national priority areas in keeping with the 2022 Virgin Islands Scholarship Programme Policy.

This is according to statements of the Cabinet Meeting of August 23rd, 2023, chaired by His Excellency, the Governor John J. Rankin, in the Premier's Conference Room, Cutlass Tower where all Members were present.

National priority areas of study

The Priority areas are Education professions (secondary school-specific, guidance counseling, educational psychology, measurement and evaluation, curriculum, etc.); Medical professions (medicine, nursing, medical technology, and any other related fields); Technical skills (plumbing, electrical, mechanics, etc.); Law (inclusive of criminal justice (professional certificate programmes); Hospitality; Architecture/engineering and related fields 2; Artistic/creative skills (e.g. music) and Information technology (software development, IT analysis, database architecture, etc.).

Other areas include Agriculture and fisheries (bio-marine, agricultural economics, biochemistry, ecology, etc.) and International relations, policy analysis, global affairs, and related fields.

Scholarships approved

Cabinet also noted and endorsed the BVI Scholarship Committee’s suggestions regarding the recommendation and non-recommendation of applicants for scholarships for Fall 2023 to Spring 2024.

It said the BVI Scholarship Committee has been approved to award Government Scholarships to some twenty-five (25) applicants to pursue studies in the academic year, Fall 2023 to Spring 2024.

        We all know most of them aint coming back, they will use the money and stay and work in the states and europe

    We need more scholarships in Plumbing,electrical engineering ,agriculture and entrepreneurship. Also, consider the returning of those students and the employment in either setting up their own businesses or employment in their field of study. No one can become an expert until they have learn to execute their skills in professional fields.
