Cabinet approves additional Commercial Court in VI

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Cabinet of the Virgin Islands has approved the establishment of a third Commercial Court under the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC).

The Virgin Islands is currently home to one of two Commercial Divisions of the ECSC High Court of Justice, with the other being in St Lucia. The Commercial Court hears “commercial claims” with a minimum value of US$500,000.

According to a Post Cabinet Statement on September 3, 2026, Cabinet met on August 19, 2026, and approved the establishment of a third Commercial Court under the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and noted the provision of the necessary funding for the period 2026-2029 to facilitate the appointment of the additional Judge, essential supporting court administration staff and obtaining commercial rental space to commence hearing matters within the fourth quarter of 2026.

The Commercial Court in the Virgin Islands was established in 2009.

The Cabinet Meeting was chaired by His Excellency the Acting Governor David D. Archer, Jr. All Members were present, with the exception of the Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, and the Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports.
