C. Michael Thomas & Ian S. Smith In! as top brass of TRC Board
This will take effect from February 13, 2015 after its expected approval in the House of Assembly the day before and his tenure will be for two years.
It was Virgin Islands News Online that first and accurately reported on January 23, 2015 that the former Chairwoman, Attorney and Author, Ayana S. Hull had demitted office in December of 2014 after she refused to renew her three-year appointment. This news site also was the first to accurately report that Guy L. Malone will not continue as the Chief Executive Officer once his contract expires at the end of this month.
According to the Order Paper for the House of Assembly Sitting on February 12, 2015 Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool will move the motion to give effect to Mr Thomas’ appointment as the new TRC Board Chairman.
Efforts to reach Mr Thomas for a comment were unsuccessful up to post time.
It’s the law
Section 7(1) and (2) of the Telecommunications Act, 2006 provides for the establishment of a Board of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission comprising a minimum of three and a maximum of five Commissioners.
Further, Section 7(3) of the Act provides that the Minister for Communications and Works shall, after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition, recommend to the Cabinet the appointment of one of the Commissioners as Chairman and another as Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Commission and that such appointment shall be subject to the approval of the House of Assembly.
New Deputy Chairman is Ian S. Smith
Also on February 12, 2015 at the Third Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Second House of Assembly, the TRC will obtain a new Deputy Chairman of the Board of Commissioners in the person of former Banker Ian S. Smith. Mr Smith’s appointment will take effect from February 13, 2015 and will be for three years.
Controversy looms over 4G
One of the big issues on the plate for the new Chairman is the controversy looming over who gets to be awarded the LTE (4G) Spectrum and to ensure the process is fair and transparent.
There have been complaints from some in the telecommunications industry that political figures have been pressuring the TRC to award a specific company the lucrative LTE (4G) Spectrum without going through a fair and transparent process.

CCT raped us while they were being raped by LIME/C&W for using their infrastructure! Why CCT gets so much flack and LIME gets a pass? LIME was the first one here and up to now all the other providers still use their infrastructure. So what are you talking about? We have been trained to hate each other and that's the problem. Because the 'local' part of is is not 'me' I shouldn't fight for it. That is why the white expats will come in here, promise you all silver and gold and give you goat s..t in a box and you will still hate your own. YOU are the one that is getting dumber for talking half of the story. CCT could not offer services on their own, they used C&W's service and C&W got some of those same charges.
