ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A grant of five hundred thousand dollars has been approved for the BVI Tourist Board (BVITB) to undertake a territory-wide beautification project.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D Wheatley (R7) made the announcement moments ago, November 26, 2024, at a press conference.

The beautification project will be led by Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture Hon Luce D Hodge-Smith (R4), as the Virgin Islands (VI) enters its peak tourism and festive seasons.

This beautification project will be undertaken in all districts and on every sister island.

Recent events made project necessary- Premier Wheatley

The Premier added that the beautification project is a direct response to the pressing need for restoration of the VI’s aesthetics and safety for residents and visitors following the prolonged rainfall.

“The rains have led to significant overgrowth of vegetation which has not only affected the beauty of our landscape but also has contributed to perilous road conditions particularly around frequently traversed tourist routes,” he continued.

Cabinet endorsed project

Meantime, Premier Wheatley said the Cabinet of the Virgin Islands recognises the project’s importance and has endorsed the initiative.

Cabinet, he said, sees the territory-wide beautification project as essential.

“It is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development while maintaining the attractiveness of the Virgin Islands as a premier tourist destination. We are confident that this beautification project will further enrich the experience of those who visit and live in our territory,” the Premier stated.

Once the natural environment has been ruined by insensitive development, beautification is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Everything cannot be about money. Therein lies our problem. Community Pride and Engagement is what is missing from the BVI right now. With all the so-called service clubs in the place there is no will or desire to clean up and maintain the place at the grass root, community level.
Here are some engaging and impactful ideas for community clean-up projects:
      1. Beach Cleanup: Organize a day to clean up area beaches.
      2. Neighborhood Litter Walks: Plan regular litter-picking walks around your neighborhood. It’s simple but effective.
      3. Park Beautification: Clean and enhance open spaces by planting trees, flowers, and maintaining green spaces.
      4. Graffiti Removal: Work with government agencies to clean up graffiti and restore public spaces.
      5. School Grounds Cleanup: Involve students in cleaning and beautifying their school grounds. It’s educational and fosters community spirit.
      6. Trail Maintenance: For areas with hiking trails, organize groups to clean and maintain these paths.
      7. Adopt-a-Street: Launch an "Adopt-a-Street" program where different groups take responsibility for keeping a specific street clean.
      8. Recycling Drives: Set up collection points for recyclable materials to encourage proper disposal and recycling.
      9. Community Garden: Start a community garden where people can grow their own food and learn about sustainable practices.
      10. E-Waste Collection: Organize events to collect electronic waste and ensure it is properly recycled.
      11. Best Village/Community Competitions – fosters community pride
These cannot be one-off events, must be sustained and continuous.

Have any of the community/ district reps have any community groups or they reps just have some partners who they parcel out work (bush cutting, road resurfacing)ect? All that money could be dispersed to these community group to address the unique issues each community faces. The community can will decide persons from the community who capable of doing the job. If one cannot be located in the district/community then an external source can be agreed upon after all relevant bidders are assessed by the community. There should be some measure of transparency throughout the process. This can be a model for each community taking responsibility for their environment and communal esthetic. A model of how quickly communities rebound from natural disasters even.

How about we STOP spewing raw sewage into the sea at Prospect Reef and the millions of gallons of s h i t being dumped in our sea by thousands of charter boats, MOST CIVILIZED countries have sewage offloading terminals at their marina's, we need that implementing NOW. You can try polishing a turd but it's still a turd.

Trimming trees and cutting along road ways, collecting thrash and debris,, grading and maintaining road side ditches, maintaining parks. grounds, maintaining public rest room facilities, etc, should be a routine function performed by Public Works. What is the damn role of Public works? Is it a service provider in name only? Can we put the ‘eork’ back in public works? The Hon Kye Rymer let’s geh ah dun. If the current crew at Public Works cannot geh ah dun, geh ah nu crew. $500K to keep the territory in an aesthetically pleasing state is a lot. VI residents needs to get into the act of keeping the place clean. Where is the pride?

Fix the roads. Fix the sewage. Make the people build/ repair their retaining walls. Every time it rains, town and other low lying areas get covered in mud withing 15 mins. And stop cutting down all the trees, it's making the place hot and the soil loose. Plant more sensible trees. Palm trees are useless, ugly and generic. Plant like flamboyant or something. You will get shade and beauty from that. Bring back the garbage bins. It's hard to find bins in town.

BVI Tourist Board has been nothing but a fluff piece for the past 20 years. When things go well, they take the credit and when things are not going well, it's the Government's fault. Private enterprise in the BVI hold their own weight and do not rely on the BVITB for any assistance. 95% of the gains seen in tourism is a result of hard work of the businesses themselves, not BVITB. Don't believe me? Ask BVITB where is their overall 10-15yr outlook for the Territory and what strategies have been put in place. Putting up tents, flyers, banners and a few commercials is not marketing, but carry on.
