BVIPA in a September 15, 2023, release said the Internship programs hold immense significance, both for aspiring students and organizations like the Ports Authority by offering hands-on experience where students gain a practical understanding of their chosen field, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.

“For the BVI Ports Authority, the Internship Program is an invaluable resource. It enables us to identify and nurture local talent, ensuring a future workforce that is well-prepared and aligned with our organization's needs. Furthermore, it allows us to contribute to the growth and development of our community by offering students an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, setting the stage for their future success.”

To qualify, students must be pursuing studies in a field relevant to their chosen placement area.

Without those old people they will be no security. Most of The young ones have no clue, no interest, no discipline. A few of the old ones also. They just show up to say they have a job and get pay...

Create a 6 weeks training camp for new young Port security with less than 3 yrs experience in any kind of security...and 3 week training for those with more than 3 yrs experience. With no military training .. I Week for those with Police and military training..Getting them acquainted with port laws, rules., policies, discipline and expectations. Port Security is to important to just take up someone with no or little experience or knowledge hoping they pick up as they work along.. Time to create high standards.. (Police do 20 weeks for new recruits and sometimes you wonder if that is enough or if some or just not for the Job)..

Government needs a wholistic plan rather than everyone in Government offices & statutoryboards playing politics with their neck of the woods on boards and Government.

This is good news, better late than never, and all Government departments ought to be doing ongoing training via internships. BVI future workforce needs to be secured from within from now on. Sending students abroad who never come back is a waste of time and money.
