BVIHSA commences Social Workers Week with church service
Seizing the opportunity to create awareness, Social Worker Ms. Juanita George addressed the congregation and gave a brief overview of the unit and its responsibilities. “Social Workers are teachers, counselors, financial advisors, coaches, activists, planners and the list goes on,” Ms. George said, just before speaking on the six core values of social work which are Service, Social Justice, Dignity and Worth of a Person, Importance of Human Relationships, Integrity,and Competence.
All Social workers received a special blessing as Pastor Melvin Turnbull prayed for the members and asked for God’s guidance as they serve their community.
“Social Workers believe that helping people navigate difficult environments, while respecting their innate strengths will improve the lives of individuals and the community as a whole.” Mrs. Marion Turnbull, Head of the Unit stated when asked about her thoughts on her role as a Social Worker.
The week’s activities include the launching of the Dialysis Unit Support Group, visiting the elderly patients while providing care packages, and a Social Services Open House set for this Wednesday, 20th March beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Peebles Hospital. Prior to the observance week, Mrs. Marion Turnbull and Ms. Ingrid Penn appeared on ‘Spotlight’ on JTV – Channel 55 with Talk Show host, Edju Enka to speak on the purpose of the celebrations.
The Social Workers Unit is also hosting a ‘Clothing, Accessory, and Food Drive for babies that is scheduled during the Open House. Members of the public wishing to donate to the drive are kindly asked to contact the Social Workers office on 852-7588.
The BVIHSA plans and implements their activities in accordance with the Health Services Authority Strategic Priorities. Its mission is, ‘to be the leader and preferred provider of healthcare in the Virgin Islands.’ The motto of the Authority is, ‘Only Excellence Counts’.
