BVIFA says its not implicated in receipt or acceptance of bribes
In the press release, the BVIFA said the resignation has immediate affect and went onto say that the Association thanked her “for the revitalization of football in the BVI”.
The release further stated that the BVIFA acknowledges the very influential role she played in football where she was the highest ranking female in the membership of the Caribbean Football Union.
The official press release ended with a reminder, “That despite the misconception and often inaccurate speculations on various (online) blogs recently, the BVI Football Association has not been implicated in the receipt or acceptance of any bribes nor had Ms. Pickering.”
Meanwhile, the position of Acting President will be held by Mr. Aubrey Liburd (1st. Vice President) until elections are held to fill the post. Mr. Liburd stated that the BVIFA were awaiting confirmation from FIFA of the ban and would then take all necessary decisions to fill the position. The rumor mill though has already started with various names being bandied about by players and officials. One name mentioned is former President Andy Bickerton. According to some players, another popular choice is another former President, Kenrick Grant.
When contacted Grant said he was not considering standing unless a General Meeting was called for the entire “BVI Football Family” to discuss a more transparent and accountable way for the Association to move forward.
“It’s not something I would consider unless changes are made for the good of Football,” he commented. “I would also like to hear what the Association’s own Disciplinary Committee has to say on the matter,” he added with reference to the FIFA decisions.
The Presidential vacancy is not the only issue facing the BVIFA as they are yet to fill the position left by the untimely death of Wendoll Williams. The positions of Treasurer and General Secretary are also open following the resignation of Martin Cooke for family reasons and the non- renewal of James Shearman’s contract as General Secretary for reasons unknown.
Whatever happens over the next few weeks the BVIFA will have to move swiftly, openly and decisively if they are to maintain the progress being made at Youth, Women’s and Senior Levels.
