BVIEC tasked with rebuilding line for water plant & hospital in Montego Bay, Jamaica
During the BVI stands with Jamaica and Haiti Disaster Relief Telethon on Sunday, November 9, 2025, the General Manager of BVIEC, Dr Neil M. Smith, said his men may have been the second team to arrive in Jamaica just days after the Category 5 Hurricane’s passage.
As a member of the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC), the BVIEC has pledged its support to assist Jamaica if needed.
“We had our team ready by the Friday after it hit, which was the day after, and they left on the Sunday,” Dr Smith disclosed.
Team working in Montego Bay
Dr Smith revealed that the BVIEC team is currently stationed in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where they are tasked with rebuilding a line that powers a water plant and hospital in the area.
The team he added is doing well and is not daunted or depressed by the situation.
“I’m quite pleased we had the opportunity to assist our sister utility. They came to us in 2017 when we had Irma and Maria, and they did a lot of work for us, and we’re quite grateful for the assistance they gave us, and I’m pleased that we now have the opportunity to return that favour.”
A sacrifice I don’t mind- Dr Smith
BVIEC will be present in Jamaica for a month in the first instance, following which the situation will be assessed, and if needed, the team will stay longer or return home.
“It’s actually a sacrifice to us, but I really don’t mind doing it at all because we are our brothers' keepers, aren’t we? And whenever we get in a situation where we find that our brothers and sisters need assistance, I should not be any hesitant in assisting them.”
