BVIEC will change traditional roadway lighting to Light Emitting Diodes (LED) in efforts to conserve energy.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- One of the objectives of the Government of the Virgin Islands is to reduce the territory’s dependence on imported oil derived from fossil fuels. The strategy for accomplishing the aforementioned is multifaceted and will be initiated by various methods. The first of these methods is through the use of techniques involving energy conservation. One such conservation method is with the conversion of our traditional roadway lighting to Light Emitting Diodes (LED).

Therefore, the BVI Electricity Corporation in aggressively advancing the above-mentioned policy of the Government has been testing various LED streetlights on its network, manufactured by LEDTRONICS INC., PHILIPS and SV Solar Lighting Co Ltd.

On Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. an LED streetlight pilot will be performed with General Electric, one of the manufacturers of some of the existing roadway lighting used by BVIEC.

The pilot will involve the replacement of existing streetlights to LED in the following areas:

(3) Walter Francis Highway from the Station Avenue Traffic Lights to the Roundabout.

The change out will commence with 3 above, at 6:30 p.m. and the Minister for Communications and Works will be onsite at this historic occasion.

The complete change out of all public roadway lighting to LED will translate to cost, socio economic and environmental benefits, just to name a few.
