LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI- “What we are doing right now is we actually are developing or investing in a workforce that will be taking over the organisation, or leading the organisation in maybe the next 10 years or so,” General Manager of BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Dr Neil M. Smith stated at a press conference on Thursday, November 14, 2024, to give details on BVIEC’s first ever career exposition.

Under the theme ‘Driving Innovation and Excellence through a Dynamic and Inclusive Workforce’, the BVIEC Career Expo will be held from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the BVIEC Long Bush Compound on Friday, November 29, 2024.

Dr Smith said the expo is a pivotal initiative to see the BVIEC on a path into the future as it prepares to support the development of the Virgin Islands' economy into the future.

The BVIEC GM said BVIEC anticipates, for example, the integration of renewables onto the grid becoming more and more a part of our lives. He also said “We are noticing” a more discerning and less tolerant public, and BVIEC believes that it must be able to leverage technology and advance techniques to improve the quality and efficiency of service.

“And in doing that, we know that the most important resource we have and the most sophisticated piece of technology that we can get our hands on is a human being. And so we believe and we know, based on our assessments, that we need to train our future workforce.”

Interested in a career with BVIEC?

Dr Smith continued that BVIEC is looking for individuals who will want to have a career with BVIEC and a career in the energy sector.

He said BVIEC has partnered with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) to develop and forge technical skills in youth who are now of college age and are willing to work with BVIEC to forge a “more deep technical type of ethos” in the organisation.

Dr Smith added that BVIEC has relationships with other CARILEC members and is trying to foster close relationships with other educational institutions in the region and further afield.

“We are inviting the community and individuals who are seeking careers in technical skills that we need such as mechanical and electrical technicians, engineers, financing, accounting skiils, data analytics and information technology or who could envision themselves being a part of a dynamic and committed workforce that would be the centre of the BVIEC’s ability to develop and thrive into the future,” Dr Smith said.

This is a plan of action, for VI agencies are poor at succession planning. It is as if the top dogs fear losing their positions to subordinates. Instead, they should work with and engaged in succession planning.

In the short space of time you are there, you have shown yourself as a visionary leader who cares for the wellbeing of your employees and one who seeks to give customers affordable and renewable energy options.
