VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI-  The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has begun critical upgrades to the electrical grid on Virgin Gorda, part of a broader effort to improve the reliability and resilience of power supply across the territory.

The work follows recent discussions between BVIEC leadership and Ninth District Representative Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley, during which planned improvements were outlined to address long-standing issues affecting customers on the island.

Upgrades Underway

Crews from BVIEC were seen on the ground on Sunday, September 6, 2026, carrying out targeted interventions to strengthen the distribution network, reduce outages, and enhance overall system performance for Virgin Gorda residents and businesses.

In a Facebook statement, Ninth District Representative Honourable Wheatley thanked the BVIEC teams for their diligence and also acknowledged the people of Virgin Gorda for their patience and cooperation while the upgrades are being implemented.

“On behalf of the Ninth District residents, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the BVI Electricity Corporation teams for their ongoing work to upgrade and strengthen our electrical grid on Virgin Gorda,” Hon Wheatley said. 

“As highlighted by Director Smith during our discussion a few weeks back on the planned improvements, works have begun and continue to address the issues and improve the reliability of our electricity supply.”

Concerns over electricity reliability 

In recent times, Virgin Gorda residents have expressed frustration over the current lack of reliable electricity.

Frequent outages, fluctuating voltage, and extended periods without power have disrupted households, small businesses, and essential services, prompting calls for faster completion of the improvement works.

    Love this to see my former workplace BVIEC advanced, seeing the cover up on the lines is a beauty for me, I was trained on a fibreglass platform the hard way where you have to climb with spikes, big up to you guys and niel smith, and not forgetting my old foreman Kenrick wood pelter.

    Oh nooo . what are we going to do now to trick the people of VG. ? because althugh the is a Minister of works in charge of electricity we too coward to attack him so we will try to fool you into thinking its our Rep. Notice that this is not done in ANY other area just the 9th.If there is power issue in Seas Cows Bay nobody says its Frasers fault . This only happen in the 9th.But wait you know what this is what we could do , Lets take the credit for pushing the issue (although the project was planned already).The people ogf VG wont know any different.So it because of us and our big financial backer sthat we getting Electricity.
