ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The 6-man technical team from the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) deployed to Jamaica has returned home following a month of restoration works there.

Jamaica was severely impacted by the passage of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa on October 28, 2025.

BVIEC joined other regional power companies through the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) to assist the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) in its power restoration efforts following the infrastructural damage.

BVIEC always willing to assist

The BVIEC team, drawn from the Transmission and Distribution Department, departed the Territory on November 2, 2025, and returned on December 3, 2025, Public Relations and Marketing Media Manager Kamal Haynes told our News Centre on January 21, 2026.

During their assignment, the team spent the majority of their time rebuilding damaged power lines, replacing light poles, and planting new poles to support the restoration of electricity services. The first week of operations was carried out in Montego Bay, while the remaining three weeks were focused on Negril, where the damage was extensive and sustained technical support was required.

“BVIEC is always willing to assist our Caribbean brothers and sisters whenever the need arises and when we are in a position to do so. Regional cooperation and mutual support are essential, especially in times of recovery, and we are proud of our team for representing the Territory with professionalism and skill,” Mr Haynes said.
