ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – There was a mammoth turnout for the BVI Cancer Society’s (BVICS) second annual Run/Walk for a Cure held on Saturday October 18, 2014.

One cancer survivor said it best, saying that if each person who ran or walked represented a person battling with Cancer and by that person running or walking with the BVI Cancer Society meant that the person they represented would have been cured, it sure that there would be no more cancers in the Virgin Islands.

“But rather there would be so many left over cure packages to share with another small country as the VI which too might very well rid that country of the disease,” said the survivor.

While there were lots of other incentives for persons who participated this year they were happier that their names will go down as being advocates for a cure to be found for the disease. However Mr Simon Cooke and Ms Claudia Ferrari had the extra special and added incentive for being the first male and female respectively to have crossed the finish line that morning.

“The turnout was great again this year, the commitment for the cause was well spoken by persons' actions and this has given me, the committee and other stakeholder the courage and strength to continue the fight because we know we are not alone,” said President of the BVI Cancer Society Ms Gloria A. Fahie.

Among the noticeable stakeholders on the ground was Bare Foot which distributed lots of gifts to participants and was also very active participants with their group running the full distance. The other was the promoters of the ‘Poise’ branded women sanitary napkins. They too were active participants and had the second largest group of persons wearing their pink out T-Shirts and Sun Glasses.

They also distributed the Halibarange multivitamin energy boost supplements to those present.

Good job, but it would be nice if there were some awareness for some of the other cancer awareness months. JANUARY-Cervical Cancer Awareness, FEBRUARY-National Cancer Prevention Month, Gallbladder and Bile duct Cancer Awareness, MARCH-Colorectal Cancer Awareness and Kidney Cancer Awareness, APRIL-Testicular Cancer Awareness and Esophageal Cancer Awareness, MAY-Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness, Brain Cancer Awareness and Head and Neck Cancer Awareness, JUNE- National Cancer Survivor Month, JULY- Sarcoma Awareness, Bladder Cancer Awareness, SEPTEMBER-Childhood Cancer Awareness, Gynecological Cancer Awareness, Leukemia/Lymphoma, Mutiple Myeloma Awareness, Ovarian Cancer Awareness, Prostate Cancer Awareness and Thyroid Cancer Awareness, OCTOBER-Breast Cancer Awareness and Liver Cancer Awareness, NOVEMBER-Pancreatic Cancer Awareness, Lung Cancer Awareness, Stomach Cancer Awareness, Carcinoid Cancer Awareness and Caregivers Month. Even some public awareness would be nice, you don't even have to parade the colors.
