TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- Silver Airways has ceased all operations today, Wednesday, June 11, 2025, in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean, and the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) has taken proactive steps to address the void in air travel this would cause.

The airline’s move comes as it filed for bankruptcy in December 2024, to secure additional capital and for financial restructuring.

Silver Airways, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, provided a network of flights, particularly connecting Tortola to various Caribbean destinations and, at one point, to its San Juan hub.

The airline used to conduct two flights daily from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island.

BVIAA engaged airlines servicing the SJU-EIS route

Mr Kurt A.G. Menal, Managing Director of BVIAA, told our news centre today, June 11, 2025, that they have been closely monitoring the situation surrounding Silver Airways for several months.

The BVIAA, he said, has maintained open lines of communication with the airline during this period.

“We recognise the importance of reliable air service to the Territory, particularly along the San Juan (SJU) to Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) route.”

In anticipation of potential disruptions, the BVIAA “proactively engaged” airlines currently servicing the San Juan to Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport route in discussions.

Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) confirmed these engagements to our news centre, which he said could “possibly augment” the service.

Mr Menal added, “As a result of these efforts, several carriers have already begun to address the increased demand resulting from Silver Airways' cessation of service.”

Airlines stepping up to assist are Cape Air and InterCaribbean Airways, Mr Menal confirmed.

“We remain committed to enhancing air service to the Virgin Islands by increasing route options and strengthening connectivity,” Menal added.

I wonder if they paid their fees like they did in Anguilla, yea Menal, show us they were paying and be accountable. Also, how did you prepare if nothing has changed from adding existing air lift? Seems like you just bulldozed talking points.

So is how much silver owe bviaa and how long they behind. and what menal was doing all the time to make them pay up? Or was silver just allowed to keep running up a bill and not paying?

What proactive measures did Menal put in place? Sounds like smoke and mirrors to me!!

He was just talking crap out the other hole. Shouldn't the measures be in place long before this Airline ceased operations. Bet they were still taking reservations days before closing. In this place, it seems everything is a big secret until the muck hit the fan then everybody starts trying to fix this or that, coming to the public talking from both sides of their mouth as if we stupid. The airline filed bankruptcy, in Dec. 2024 and was trying to restructure but closed 6 months after due to lack of interest by investors. So, he sat there cowardly waiting for them to figure whats next instead of doing his job to ensure there were add'l airlift. Guess the exorbitant amount we pay him monthly isn't enough for him to do his job properly.Who trying to fly with Lee at and Eenta Cari b en? We going from bad to worst. Time to go back travelling by Steamer like my granpa and others did back in 1950s and 60s. I wonder if my jackass can swim from here to Antigua?

Proactive? Rubbish. Every Silver hub, staff, passenger and pilot woke up this morning to this. Yea we knoq about the problem ongoing with bankruptcy but nobody knew yesterday what was announced today. Maybe a manager or 2 were told last night and that's it. When passengers came, they went to other counters seeing if they could buy a ticket. BVIAA wasn't there to help nobody stranded. If you could pay Cape their over 800 then pay it.
    .
We can't blame thr government for this because it's every silver destination, St Thomas, PR, Dominica, U.S - whole ting shut down.

Intercaribbean is another story to tell. They got their own problems they can't get under control so let we wait and see if they will be more reliable because of the demand. I doubt it. Hooe Caribbean Airline step up to the plate and offer more frequent flights to PR instead of 2 days a week
