BVI rugby team gets NACRA campaign off to winning start

After being down, BVI eventually regained the lead through good play from their forwards supported by the 3⁄4 line. Try was scored by #8 Andre Adams and converted by Rory Greenan. This seemed to deflate Saint Lucia and the lack of replacements became a factor in the final try as BVI finally put the game in their favour with a late try by lock Eugene Maduro near the end of the match. BASSETERRE, St Lucia- In perfect conditions for rugby, the BVI kicked off their 2015 NACRA 15’s Championship with a convincing win over hosts St Lucia, 22-14, on Saturday February 28, 2015.

The weather was hot and sunny but enough rain fell during the match to cool the temperature.

BVI put early pressure on the Saint Lucia defense and continued to dominate for most of a thirty-five minute span, with good ball retention through rucks and mauls which resulted in a few penalties but none within kicking range.

The score was 0-0 with no sign of a breakthrough until against the run of play, Saint Lucia scored the first try through outside center Linford Eugene near the post, which was converted by Colvis Samuels. St. Lucia 7 – BVI 0 was the score.

BVI responded almost immediately with a well worked try using their heavy forwards in a series of rucks and mauls. Their try was scored by outside half Adebola Hafner and converted by Rory Greenan.

BVI eventually took the lead at the end of the half through a penalty kick by Rory Greenan. St. Lucia 7 – BVI 10.

Ball handling was fair but both teams were guilty of handling errors especially with passes in their opponents’ 22 metre area.

The second half was a repeat of the first and BVI continued to enjoy territorial advantage through most of the second frame, but again Saint Lucia scored against the run of play and took the lead through scrum half Claudius Butcher which was converted by Samuels. St Lucia 14 – BVI 10.

The pattern of play saw no change in tactics as BVI used their forwards while St Lucia depended on the speed of their backs. BVI eventually regained the lead through good play from their forwards supported by the 3⁄4 line, the try scored by #8 Andre Adams and converted by Greenan seem to deflate St Lucia and the lack of replacements became a factor in the final try as BVI finally put the game in their favour with a late try by lock Eugene Maduro near the end of the match.

Final score: St. Lucia 14 – BVI 22.
