ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Lights! Camera! Action! Have you ever considered a career behind or in front of the studio camera; or wondered how Hollywood and the international movie industry operate? Are you ready to put your acting skills from the theatrical stage to your first screen test for a television commercial?

The BVI Film Commission is hosting a three-day “Intro to Film Opportunities Workshop”, geared to students in third, fourth and fifth form, and freshmen and sophomores in college, who may be interested in learning more about the film industry.

The workshop will take place at Long Bay Beach Resort from Thursday, November 15 to Saturday, November 17 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. each day.

As the first programme of its kind, the BVI Film Commission strives to use this platform as a vehicle for exposing local youth to the many facets of this visual medium. “We’re excited to offer this extensive workshop. Cinema studies have rapidly grown over the years to include motion-picture filmmaking, documentary filmmaking, production, entry into foreign language films, and much more,” said Rhodni Skelton, Film Commissioner of the BVI Film Commission. “As the film industry expands, opportunities will continue to open for our Territory.  We have lots of young people, who are very creative whether in writing, visual effects, theatrics, etc. whose talents could be used to carve out exciting careers for themselves.  This workshop is intended to expose them to these opportunities and give them the means to build upon their interests.  This may mean pursuing collegiate studies in film or entering into the film industry directly.”

On the final day of the workshop, participants will take part in producing a high-quality tourism commercial, to be used by the BVI Tourist Board in its future promotions.  Attendees of the workshop will act as Directors, Producers, Actors, Grip & Lighting personnel, Writers of the Script, etc., and will be able to officially use this production as their first credit.

Casting for the actors of this commercial will be held on Thursday, November 8 and Friday, November 9. For more information contact Rhodni Skelton, Commissioner of the BVI Film Commission at rskelton@bvitourism.com.

About the BVI Film Commission

The BVI Film Commission was established over 20 years ago to facilitate and encourage film productions coming into the VI. Since then the entire country has embraced the film fraternity and warmly welcomes an increasing number of productions each year. Many such productions are repeat guests to the VI, with crews that the local population has come to know personally by name.

The BVI Film Commission acts as a liaison between the film/photography producers and all relevant Government agencies, particularly Customs, Labour and Immigration Departments, National Parks Trust and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.
